Still havent got used to juddering clutch.

My 1.6 FSI still judders in first gear when pulling away only alleviated by keeping revs high and slightly slipping it to achieve a smooth pull away. Speaking to a mechanic a work he suggested possible oil on clutch plate. Does anyone know if the clutch slave cylinder is an internal one in the gearbox. My mate at work said if it was external it could have a leak and be easily replaced. I have mentioned this problem before but thought by now I would be used to driving the car enough to find it easy not to stall. Which I don't! If the slave cylinder fluid is low and does have a leak is it that costly to rectify? I should have posted this a while ago with A2 owners as I am sure as in the past you the members have been e great help and support. Any advice again would be greatly appreciated. James

Hi,

Oil on the clutch plate / flywheel is very rarely clutch fluid, it is more often engine oil or even gearbox oil.

But are you sure that it is the clutch that is the problem?

If the engine is not running sweetly this can cause low power when pulling away, after the car is moving the power loss is less noticeable.

If your MPG has been suffering a little recently, this too could indicate an engine problem.

So I would make sure that it is not an engine / performance problem before you go down the route of any major work, stripdown.

Do you think it might just be a power problem or are you convinced that it is the clutch engaging fiercely?

Hi Steve and thanks for the reply. Not being very mechanically minded i will admit to noticing fuel consumption being higher recently. When the car has been running for a while and has been turned off and then restarted the revs drop on initial fire up to about 600 rpm then climb back up again after a second or so thinking the car is going to stall. Just driving local though this doesn't happen. I could take it in for a check up with local garage but as most of was concerned that they would diagnose incorrect fault. I hope this isn't too serious a problem although i do want it fixed as otherwise i am very pleased with the car. James

I would recommend that you get the car checked out by someone who understands A2s and the 1.6FSI in particular.

Are there any members local to you that could do a scan and look for errors. and perhaps give you a second opinion? Anyone near Ipswich?

A local garage with no experience of A2s could misdiagnose the problem accidentally.

I don't know of any Steve but if anyone on this site knows of any good garages i would be grateful. Thanks again and i will see if i can find anyone who can help! James

I am confident that someone will be able to help if anyone is close enough to you.

Why not try a Google search for independent VW specialists in your area, or ask any acquaintance who has a not-very-new VW. The same FSI engine was widely installed in Golfs of that era and a good VW mechanic will be able to to diagnose it. There's no need to look for an A2 specialist for FSI engine work.

Thanks Jackhay for your advice, will have a look at specialist garages when I am not working and go from there. Cheers again James.
