Sudden loss of power 1.4Tdi

I have had a similar problem with sudden lack of power going up steady hills. Need to change to 4th and can only manage 60mph. First happened on MI heading north past Lakes in June 2010. Fine when we levelled out and for remainder of long journey to Aberdeen and Chichester. Did not happen again for almost a year. Now happening more often but still unpredictable – always the same and you can feel the power drain away, 60mph in 4th is all it can manage uphill. I have owned 1.4 TDi 90bhp since new. All services by Audi until last time when I went to cheap local guy – service was fine, but he wasn't keen to investigate the power drain. Reading this blog, I guess it may be a split/loose turbo boost signal line, leaking intercooler or something called a MAF sensor, or maybe those turbo vanes? What I don't understand is why it happens intermittently rather than all the time. Useful suggestions that avoid wasting lots of money at a garage anywhere near Portsmouth or Chichester (any recommendations?) would be helpful. Otherwise, it's a great car!

It'll be one of those three problems. Get it scanned for error codes first to see if its an underboost or overboost fault and take it from there. Hoses and intercooler are easy to fix. If its stuck vanes these can be cured by a turbo refurbish specialist rather than necessarily needing a costly turbo replacement... If you can get to London visit Wak at VAGCheck he's an Audi turbo guru.

Sorry to high jack your thread.

Mine has the same loss of power under load ( not foot flat ) I have a 03 plate 75bhp but weirdly this only happens when the engine is cold never when it's warmed up.

Ive had a look at all small pipes etc but cannot find any thing. Mainly don't know exactly know what I'm looking for.
For the time being I just restart the engine and hey bingo perfect!

Hi Jeremy21
Start with a diagnostic scan as Dan suggested but I'd guess that in your case it could be down to sticking turbo vanes. If it had been split hoses or intercooler core I think the symptoms would have got progressively worse until the engine went into limp home mode every time it was under load.
Take a look at this web site (found by Ecoangel) which shows how to clean a typical variable geometry turbo with the last pic showing the vanes in action

Have you looked at the link in post 7 of this thread for pics of a split intercooler core

Have any of you guys had the EGR valve checked as these symptoms sound familiar, I have just done my egr on my Renault Laguna, i had the fuel injection warning come up on the on-board comp went into limp mode and would not pull on in the gears really slow to accelerate, i cleaned out the valve and its back to normal and no warnings !!, just a thought.

I had a problem with my 1.4TDI with behaviour similar to what is described in this post. In my case I had the engine hesitate and misfire on a couple of occasions over about two weeks. Then one occasion it continually misfired until I stopped and restarted the engine and it ran okay to get me home. Took it to be repaired and the fault codes showed miss-fire No. 1 cyclinder and electrical fault in injector circuit. Garage replaced the injector harness in the head and it running fine now. Cost £174 incl labour. My mileage is 127k and year is 2003. VW hold this part in stock which we think because it is a frequent fault after the wires soaked in oil for long time.
