Information Suspension overview: sport springs, sport dampers, coilovers and airride

Hi, first of all - the A2 specific H&R sport springs are VERY stiff!

Generally these H&R springs are only available as 4-piece sets. So we would mess up the spring setting between front and rear axle if mounting H&R sport springs at the front plus standard-type springs at the rear (and it would be illegal of course).

The only MOT/TÜV -legal and technically functional (good ride comfort-wise) alternative would be the yellow coloured set of front 1.6 FSI Weitec springs (part # 28210325) which allows a height drop of about 20 mm in combination with Koni FSD shocks.

cost ca. EUR 90 :)

Great summary! But.. there is one question that seems unanswered - what difference, if any, does the improved suspension make to traction?

I have an unmapped TDI 90 Sport with Pirelli P Zero Nero tyres on the front (205/40 17) at standard pressures, and despite this, many full throttle efforts at 30-40 mph simply result in the traction control light stopping play.

Granted, my reference on the same roads is a Smart Roadster mapped to 100 bhp, but I would hope for more from the A2 before considering a remap...

I think you should see a bit of an improvement with traction with the FSDs and better springs as they'll be able to control weight transfer a bit better, but regardless, the torque that the TDi 90 can put out will always make such a light car scrabble a bit - like a dog on a wooden floor!

You could try different tyres, that can also help?

Dan, thanks. Yes, I definitely get that dog on vinyl feeling! Of course the suspension will have limitations, but in my case I think the Pirellis are just not up to scratch.. a lot of Golf GTI owners claim the same lack of grip, so next time it will probably be Continental.

I'd get Vince at Stealth to check the geometry, also check the date of manufacture on the tyre sidewalls (four digit DOT number) as anything over four years old tends to harden and crack especially if they've done very little mileage.
Six years is the usual lifespan of any tyre, after this period they're more liable to delaminate.

My previous A2 was a 90 Sport which had nearly new Avon ZZ3's on the front, not exactly the last word in efficient grip but they seldom lost traction once Vince sorted out the geo'. . . the rear Roadchamp Champiro's on the other hand liked to let go very early, lot's of oversteer just like a well-steered Clio Sport!!

Hi I am just about to change the suspension on my 1.4TDI SE open sky 120k miles. I want to lower by a small amount: 20mm or less or keep roughly the same ride height. I'm looking for much better control on cornering but I live out in the country where the lanes are pot-holed and ridged so I probably don't want a very sporty setup as it might be very noisy? Judging from your posts and others, I probably should go for Koni FSDs & Weitec springs. A few questions please:

Which do you think would look best 30/30 or 00/30?
Do the FSDs increase body roll going into bends or give a softer "wallowy" ride under normal driving? If so I might be inclined to go for a slightly stiffer setup.

Many thanks

Hi Andy
FSDs will improve ride and handling for sure. The confounding factor is spring choice as the front FSD shocks impart a 10-15mm lift effect on which ever spring set you install.

If you want a drop over standard SE ride height, you could get Weitec -30 fronts and OEM Audi Sport rear springs - this will give you a net drop of about 15mm both front and back, with a stiffening of the ride at the same time. This is what I have on my car.

I believe others have used a selection of Spidan springs with FSDs too as these are not as stiff as the Weitecs but you can still play with ride height etc.

Hi Andy,

To add to Dan's post, have a read of this: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?19967-Spidan-Springs-on-a-TDI-with-FSDs

Cheers,

Tom

Terrific. Many thanks for this Dan, Tom - a almost bewildering quantity of info!

I chose a car with 16" wheels because I thought the 17" would take too much of a pounding on the pot holes. The comfort level is fine for me as it is, a bit stiffer would be OK so I think I will fit FSD + -30 Weitec on the front and keep the std back springs. I understand that changing rear springs isn't too difficult if I want to fit sport springs on the back later if it rides a bit high? Are the sport springs different for OSS?

Cheers

Hello Schnelletrecker, I would like to ask you what is your opinion of the FK Silverline? How did you experience the ride compared to non coilover solution?

Sorry, read your link and good excellent feedback.
