The Definitive Suspension Parts List

Very useful compilation, thanks Tom. If fitting coilovers (supplied with shortened droplinks), are there any parts here which would not be required?

Out with the old.......

.......and in with the new including meyle drop links and brake pipes for the MOT.

A much better ride - more comfortable, and no "squelching" noises from "damp" shockers over speed humps - good result !

Great work! did you carry out the work yourself? and where did you source the meyle parts? any links will be appreciated.

I bought the meyle drop links from a seller on ebay.... perfect fit

Having researched the fitting of the front suspension i decided to leave it to the professionals at a local garage (assembling the strut and moving the brake fluid reservoir etc, being two reasons). It took them 5 hrs in all to complete so if you know how much your local mechanic charges per hour you can calculate the costs involved - it is not a simple task for a novice who doesn,t have the correct tools !.

You will probably know what this means then Paul - the garage said that the meyle,s were "easier" to install due to the position of the nuts as opposed to the original Audi ones which are more awkward to fit ?.

If I wanted to refresh my suspension what would I be looking at to replace? I'm not overly happy with the handling on my A2, I consider it to be crashy without any benefit to handling (the worse of both worlds). I don't know whether I am expecting too much of it, or it just needs everything replacing.

So on the everything replacing topic this is what I was thinking:

Drop links
H&R front and rear anti roll bar and new bushes
Top mounts
Dampers (was thinking either B4 or possibly B6, but not FSDs)
Springs (open to suggestions)
Tyres (going up to 195r16)

I find it a bit roly poly, I'm not against a firm ride if it means it handles better. Anything else I will need?

It's also going to need a clutch soon, and I think new brake pads, and possibly some exhaust work. It's a good thing I like the little ******.

Your A2 suspension should be firm but not "crashy"

You should be able to hit bumps without rattles and knocking. The only noise should be the thump itself and perhaps the thump you get when the wheel lifts off the floor and the shock absorber "bottoms out"

So if you ride is firm with no knocks and rattles then that is the A2 (it is a feature that I actually like, for the handling benefits) so no need to do anything.

If it is getting "tired" then new shocks, top mounts on the front and new drop links and anti roll bar bushes may be all that is needed.

But check for the cause of any rattles and bumps before you spend money on things that are working fine.

While doing the shocks you can check the springs, they break very often, but you can see the condition easily enough anyway.

Surprised no-one has mentioned renewing the bottom ball joint? On older A2 models this is integral with the wishbone, so it's quite a job to replace. More details here: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?28571-Wishbone-balljoint

The balljoints were actually still in pretty good condition, as was the bush on the alloy console. But at 145k miles the rubber boots were perished on the balljoints and would probably have split in 6 months.

Good opportunity to fit Meyle parts though. Part numbers of wishbones: Meyle 116 050 0098 and 116 050 0099.

Was about to replace my rear springs today. Got them removed and realized that the lower rubber spring seat (8z0511149a) really needed to be replaced as well. Unfortunately I don't have any new ones, and no time to wait for shipping. Any idea if there are other more common cars out there that has a similar seat? Polo perhaps?

Just a heads up , My lower ball joints gaitors where both perished and split through,, as i replaced both the steering track rod ends and the rubber boots on these where still like new i used these to replace the lower wishbone outer boots as a perfect fit.

In terms of quality, durability, fit and finish, for the top and bottom seats for the rear springs is there anything to choose between genuine Audi parts and good aftermarket ones? I need SE ones, not the thinner Sport type.

I bought the top and bottom SE ones from Audi too. I knew they would fit, be a quality part and they lasted for 120,000 miles before they needed replacing. They are reasonably priced and I didn't want to risk a non original part.

Cheers
Dave:)

Just ordered front and rear Bilstein B4 shocks for the wife's TDI, £111.82 delivered from spring-loaded.co.uk (I have no affiliation). This was following Ecp delivered the wrong rear shocks - still awaiting someone there to comprehend customer service. ;)
