The Accord beats EVERY diesel in its segment, the Merc 220, A4, Mondeo, Vectra, BMW 3, Alfa 147 the works... I think the Estate looks particularly groovy and different... nearly as distinctive as an A2!

Hey a little friendly banter never did any harm! Come on you diesel drinkers and petrol heads - you bought the A2 for different reasons but this car has to be one of the most practical fuel efficient and technologiaclly advanced machines available today.

However Johann you really should use facts in your arguements - 60k miles to repay £1000 are you kidding?! Anyone who drives more than 15k a year will benefit from diesel. Petrol engines are only now taking on board diesel fuel injection technology - see VAG's PD ideas now in their FSI engines. Those who hate diesel are harking back to more than 5 years ago when the derv models were like tractors and London buses spued out plenty of visible particulates - still undeniably fuel efficient but sluggish without turbocharging (hey i heard they are selling double deckers for £2k each - 10mpg but twice as efficient as petrol equivalents - they, like the A2 were built from Aluminium). Now turbos suit diesel more than petrols - just look at the huge HGVs with their V10 engines - only Americans still dig big petrol engines - yes i love the old V8 sound and torque but technology moves on from Ford Mk1 Mustangs! Even the likes of Lotus and Jaguar see the future as diesel for sports cars until Fuel Cells are affordable (15 - 50 years ?). Vauxhall just did Le mans in a modified VX220 with a Fiat 1.3 multijet diesel - 150mph and over 100mpg! As a simple comparision my 1.2 TDI pumps out almost as much torque as my old Toyota Mk1 MR2 16 valve and in terms of real world driving has just as much oomph for keeping up with and passing traffic. The Mr2 did a maximum of 38mpg during the fuel crisis when i drove it slower than 50mph. Most days it returned 27 -28 mpg. Compare that with 83mpg - no contest. Yes the Mr2 was fun to drive but then so is the A2 in a differnt manner - thats more to do with layout than powerplant.

In the real world the A2 TDi makes a lot of sense. The 1.6 FSi is fun but really you need to drive both it and the new TDI 90 back to back for say a week to make a true comparision. I believe if money is no object then the British motorist 9who still believes diesels are dirty and noisy from experiences in the 1960s) will go for the petrol model but the prudent will go diesel and enjoy better overtaking performance as well as less outlay at the pumps and less impact on the environment - (bio -diesel) can you grow petrol in farmers fields?

A thought about smelly hands at the pumps - rule one : don't spill it! rule two: don't use the truckers filling point. Also if you drive a petrol car don't breathe in the fumes (in the USA they now have extractor fans as part of the pumping nozzles due to the carginogenic effects of benzene in petrol) or have an electrical fire - diesel is hard to set fire to!

well come on then if your hard enough........ ! hee hee!

No I'm not... do your own maths before accusing me of talking nonsese please! :) Below current figures between the two I used at time of buying my car (Tdi 75 and 1,4 petrol

From Audi.co.uk:
TDI 75: Combined everage: 64.0 MPG
Petrol 1,4 Combined average: 46.3 MPG
Price of diesel and petrol taken as 78p/litre

Thus over 60000 miles:
TDI
60000/64=937.5 gallons
937.5*4.5=4218 litres
4218*0.78p= £3290.62

Petrol
60000/46.3=1295.9 gallons
1295.9*4.5=5831.5 litres
5831.5*0.78p= £4548.60

Thus a saving of £1257.98

Over 15000 miles:
TDi
15000/64=234.37 gallons
234.37*4.5=1054 litres
1054*0.78p= £822

Petrol
15000/46.3=323.97 gallons
323.97*4.5=1457.18 litres
1457.18*0.78p= £1137.15

Thus a saving of £315.15

FACTS speak for themselves I'm afraid: You need to do nearly 60000 miles to break even for the £1000 you paid extra as I correctly stated before.

Please correct me if I am wrong, however;

Firstly doesn't 1 gallon = 4.55 litres ;)

Secondly, based on your figures, doesn't the diesel break even after approx 47,200 miles and not 60,000 miles?

If I however use the actual diesel / petrol prices in my area in the calculation (midlands average is Petrol: 76.4p/ltr and Diesel: 78.0p/ltr) then the diesel pays for itself in 51,000 miles.

Thanks Kaine! As I said "nearly 60000"... BUT nowhere near 15000... I did not have the time to search for actual UK average fuel prices or the correct gallon to litre conversion! :)

Reason for 2nd posting of same info as because this should really be a new post so people can find it if they need to later (especially since archiving). People that have read this post earlier will not look at it again...

Have finally driven a 1.4 TDI - demonstrator from Sutton Audi - and I see what you mean. The cars have completely different characters.

I still prefer the petrol version as a quieter and more refined drive, the TDI is definitely quicker through the gears but much noisier (above 10mph) although a little slow off the mark. And having put a few litres in my hands smell of diesel - will have to get used to the gloves when the Accord comes.

It comes down to just what you want, diesel suits you, the petrol suits us!

I will chip in my opinion, the cost difference between petrol and diesil needs to be spread over the whole life of the car, if you sell a diesil A2 after 2 years it will be worth more than the petrol. Over the life of the vehicle it will do more than 60000 miles in almost all cases so the money outlaid will be recouped. Also the diesil will go up to 30000 miles between services so there is an added cost saving.

In conclusion if you do a very low mileage say less than 10k per year go for the petrol, high mileages go for the diesil, in between there is probably not much in it so choose which you prefer.

At the end of the day it is a personal rather than economic decision for most of us.
Until now I have never owned a diesel car and would not have really considered one.
Having driven the two A2 back to back I preferred the diesel drive.
End of story.
Interestingly my next bolide will also be diesel, not in the interests of economy per se but that it is a more enjoyable and involving drive with appropriate quantities of power in all of theright rev ranges.
