Thermostat Replacement - 1.4 TDI 75BHP 2002

You do not necessarily have to remove the undertray to replace the thermostat but removing it does make draining the coolant easier.

If you have a set of car ramps, drive the car front up the ramps. Or jack up the car on one side and put an axle stand under it and then do the same on the other side.

You can now safely reach and remove all screws (torx / phillips head). And you'll find a 10mm nut fixing the undertray in each of the the wheel wells.

Just changed the temperature sender and all seemed fine until it got to 90 degrees. Warning light came on as the car had lost most of its water. The sender only fits in with rubber O ring and plastic C clip. Even though it was seated properly, once up to temp, the sender came loose and water escaped. The fixing doesn't feel very tight to me despite a new O ring. I've refilled the car and it seems fine after a second attempt but I don't have much faith in this sender seat. How tight should it feel? Sorry, I know that's like asking how long a piece of string is...

Hi,

You are not alone in doing this, it is not always easy to see that both "legs" of the C clip are fully home.

A quick road test followed by a visual check is about all you can do and that is no guaranty. But a must at least.

If you have digital camera with close-up setting it can help with a bit of re-assurance the c-clip is fitted ok. Matt

I changed mine recently and like you I felt unsure the sensor was seated properly, so I wiggled the sensor and it was clear that the hidden leg of the plastic clip was not located properly.
Remove clip put a little pressure on the end of the sensor and re-alligned the clip and pushed home, sensor now felt secure. Not tight as the 'o' ring is the seal.

Not leaked a drop so far
