1. Vince @ Stealth Racing is a thoroughly nice chap, whose glowing praise on A2OC is well deserved.

2. The turbo on a 1.4 TDi has little or no effect below 2,000 rpm, hence driving above that rev range for longer periods could well improve fuel economy. Thus conventional wisdom of driving carefully (as with a petrol engine) will not always make your fuel go further.

3. My standard 84bhp rolling road test was increased to 101bhp by Vince tinkering with the ECU

4. I am not fond of articulated lorries who saunter in the centre motorway lane for extended periods.

5. That dashboard rattle may never be traced.....

Yes, they are a great team there at "Stealth"! My car was tuned to 108bhp! I'll be there yet again, in February .... Now, that dash-rattle ... It seems to be commonly caused by bonnet location! I simply packed the bottom of the two slots where the bonnet starts to be initially re-located, following removal, with two "pads" of thick foam strip. This gave a firmer location of the bonnet, and "Hey-presto!" , that rattle was gone for good! Give it a try .... I'm sure that it'll work for you, too ....

Yes, it could be the corners of the bonnet rattling. I cured mine the same way as DJ 190. :)

Thanks, I will give it a try - to be truthful I was beginning to think the rattle was not a loose trim panel, for instance, and more somewhere inside the dash that was inaccessible. I will find some foam padding. Cheers

Incidentally I was looking at the following thread -
http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthrea...-from-inside-car-under-load&p=51737#post51737 a few days ago and thought I’d take Shazlee’s advise so, last night I placed my finger tips on the corner of the bonnet and tapped/pushed away on the passenger side which happened to be the culprit.:mad:

What I could hear is the exact sound I was hearing inside of the car like a marble rolling/rattling (I couldn’t believe that this sound was emanating from the outside as I thought it was inside the cabin/dash) so, in excitement I popped the bonnet off.
As I’m not sure how to get under the clip holder I just placed a thin card from the Kellogg’s box and folded It and tucked it into the gap where it was loose and guess what... Voila. went for a spin and the sound was gone.

Worked for me hope it works for others thanks Shazlee & David! After 2 years of ownership the sound is Goneeeeeeee… :cool:

I've always been a bit skeptical that the rattling noise was the bonnet however I'm going to try the strip of foam idea when the torrential rain we're having stops !

The offside corner of the bonnet did have some movement just below the windscreen - alas when I packed it out with foam it didn't cure the rattle.
For a moment I was quite excited as I thought the issue had be localized. Damn.
 
Try a thicker section of foam .... you want the bonnet to locate firmly when you push the two retainers into the slots ......

Odd......no rattle today. I pushed the top corner down to see if there was any movement. It was minimal. Too rainy for me to whip the bonnet off and tinker. When I drove off. No rattle....apart from the cracked handbrake grip of course, but I know about that one. Cheers

"Too rainy" rings a bell.
Does the rattle always disappear when you are using the wipers? If so you may check if the bottom pivot of the wiper arm is not to close to, almost touching the windscreen.

Cheers. Don't think the wipers are a problem but I'll check. The rattle does seem to emanate somewhere around the centre dashboard, close to the windscreen.
I thought I'd found a possible culprit the other day, but alas, denied yet again; the plastic wheel arches that protect the engine bay were lose and flapping about on one side. Secured them. Rattle continues......

You know you might have cracked it! After inspection it seemed that one of the bolts that holds the wiper blade bracket was tapping against the plastic shield that's at the bottom of the windscreen. I stuck on a bit of padding and there was decidedly less rattlling in general........that is of course when the broken top strut bearings stopped creaking enough for me to hear whether there was a rattle
