Today I.....

Today I stuffed the A2 to the fullest, drove 3hrs, unloaded it and parked in front of my other «classic»

Rob I just saw your post about the a1 wheels I wouldn’t mind a set myself but I wasn’t sure if they fitted, looking at your post they obviously do, just got to find some now !. Incidentally I’m off to Corn in a few weeks too. Mark.

I've still got a set for sale in the marketplace :) I've been running them for about 18 months now on various A2s. Even with the 215s they run fine.

Here's a set on Project 90 for reference.

I too run these 16" A1 wheels on my A2, but with 8mm spacers (and longer bolts) to the rear, otherwise rear looks narrow.. :p
(wheels have different offset (ET number) from standard A2 16" ..)
My Tyre Size: 205/50/16

Picked up Cosmo with new Bilstein B4s all round, ARB bushes, tyres, diesel filter, thermostat and a year's MOT. Saw 90˚C for the first time earlier and hoping to get fuel consumption back to miles per gallon rather than the other way round with the new filter and new diesel pump refit. Interestingly, with the 195/45 profile Uniroyals (I have 195/55 Uniroyals on my daily Tdi) and the spring swap (my Tdi's original front springs and B3 rears) the ride is remarkably similar to our 1.4i - feels much lighter over road imperfections than 'my' Tdi - the tyres themselves felt a lot lighter than I was expecting. With the smaller sidewall I was expecting slightly harsher ride but the reverse is true. A few small jobs to carry on with but feeling quite satisfied that the running gear appears nicely sorted out.

Thanks also to everyone who has assisted thus far, in particular @lvsghost who very kindly passed me on Cosmo as a running concern with many months MOT - amazing deal and very chuffed to have been able to keep things going to resurrect Cosmo. @rosscanning for the seats and meeting me at an ungodly hour on the M6, @A2Steve for the door soon to be fitted, @timmus for the headlamp connector refit / fuel mileage readout and many other folk for parts and advice far and wide.

There have also been a couple of questions about plans. Right now as my normal daily needs a driveshaft or CV joint and some other bits including @depronman 's extended 5th gear for the long family trips north and south, Cosmo is being pressed into increased daily commute use to limit the strain. The next objective - since there is already an A2oc mission for 200k - is 300k. I'm a couple of years away by my reckoning, while I am aiming to get my other half's car's injectors sorted to try to achieve 200k on a singularly abused AUA that is also being refurbed over time.

Robin, one bit of advice, with the Uniroyal avoid all potholes! I've destroyed one hitting a fairly decent pothole and bent a rim. They have very soft sidewalls even though they are classed as XL. My E91 has these on instead of RFTs and my wife did have them on her MK2 TT but she blew 2 on potholes as well... Unsure if I will replace with the same or try the new Toyo that has a similar tread and class B wet grip.

thank you for the advice and recommendation. After months of driving Cosmo with knackered ARB bushes and worn shocks I am quite sensitive about potholes so have tried to avoid ploughing through known rough patches for that exact reason. I am on classic SE 6-spoke 16" wheels though that I also understand in A2 circles are considered to be bordering on the cockroach-spec alloy rim - not very attractive and nuclear-strike proof.

Out of interest, with yours, which exact model tyre were they (diameter, profile, width, load spec etc.)? My 195/55/16 Uniroyal RS3s have put up with a lot in the last 18 months both here in Scotland and on long motorway journeys to Plymouth and feel bomb-proof - even the tread is barely diminished compared to new over >20k. As I said, the 195/45/16s I had delivered last week felt noticeably lighter when carried even though having 84V XL rating and rim protection construction and this correlates with the driving feel. The 55 profile tyres literally feel like walking boots compared to proper lightweight running spikes that the 195/45/16s give the impression of, but still are very dynamic when you put steering inputs on (maybe quite stiff sidewalls combined with adequate pressure).

In a nutshell - none of my A2s have the "abysmally hard ride" complained about by original reports and regurgitations thereof, but I don't have A) -25mm sport suspension, and B) anything other than 16" SE rims with either 195/45/16 Uniroyal, 185/50/16 Aoteli, or 195/55/16 Uniroyal with newly-done Bilstein B4s all round barring a couple of rear shocks needing to be replaced on "my" tdi in 6 months. And all of them ride pretty well, but differently. A lot of folk swear by 15" Pepperpots, maybe the 16" SE rims aren't that exciting but unless you want ( and I do at some stage) to get a set of OZ ultraleggeras in 16" that weigh around the same as Pepperpots to get a more sporting look without weight or excessive price to keep the feel - then perhaps it would be worth it. Simply not interested in the current 17" options - lightness seems to be the key.

I think the SE 16” alloy are actually rather elegant, timeless and quintessentially A2. They embody the A2 design spirit: lightness, functional, timeless and understated. What’s not to like?

Today I, finally collected my A2 after an extended stay at the garage due to a fuel pipe/pump related issue. Turns out it was just the pump, the pipe was ok. The pipe had been on back order with Audi hence the delay. When it did arrive it had two valves(?) rather than one so wasn't required anyway. Anyone know the difference between the two pipes?

Anyway nice to have the A2 back ;-)

Today I spent another day with the spanner’s.
•Thermostat done, after all the prep it came out easy with a ballend Allen key, temp sitting nicely on 90 now.
•Fuel filter changed, bit of sludge in the bottom meant nothing came out the drain plug, cleaned that out and replaced with @depronman metal plug.
•Oil dip stick end sorted. @depronman again!
•Gearbox linkage re set, very nice and smooth now and only have 3rd gear crunch when stone cold, so should get many more miles out of that.
•Headlights rejuvenated with a cordless drill kit. Now much better, caused a right mess on the front of the car, so washed as well.
•Car felt great after so treated him to a tank of BP Ultimate. Will be Interesting to see if all that helps with the MPG on next weeks 1000 mile trip.

Today @timmus came over to install full Dis, mfsw, CC, re-map and a novelty for the master; original remote key/ccu, which he completed without even blinking an eye!
My hat off to you Sir Tom; You've made that I love my A2 little bit more now it's not plain basic anymore! ?

re-map? That's a new one? I love The Nethelands and my Partner's Dutch. I'll be there in a few Month's!

Today I...

Removed the front Votex from the bumper I purchased from P Stamp to fit to the headlamp washer bumper I purchased from Fallan.

That Tiger Seal is quite something. What a pain it was to remove. I used a trim removal tool to prise the Votex away from the bumper whilst cutting along the adhesive with various knives. Quite a lot of effort was required even with new Stanley blades.

Not a job I’ll be in a hurry to do again.

Kind regards,

Tom

Today I ...... found this in the drivers doors pocket.

Anybody know what it is??

It could well be the front carpet mounting point. Not the one in the carpet but the first mount in the metal ECU/CCCU cover

This weekend I've got a courtesy car - my A2 was in for service yesterday but just as they were about to lower the ramp there was a major power cut so it's still stuck in mid-air.
Courtesy car for the day was an A1 - I'm 6'2" (188cm) and I struggled to get into it, and when I did it was decidely uncomfortable. So they gave me an A3 for today and tomorrow, not much better.
I'll be very glad to get mine back again.
