Today I replaced the V68 flap motor on my car, so with that and sorting out the handbrake earlier in the week I can finally say it's done!

Next job; everything on the front and rear suspension, MZN gearbox, clutch, front brakes, cambelt, oil pump chain and all the driveshaft joints on the wife's car (the one previously owned by Ian @Proghound). And 4 sets of lightweight alloys to refurbish 😂

Goodness me has all that lot come up at once? I guess it is nearly 5 years since the last cambelt though and the oil pump chain makes sense at that mileage. I hope the slickness of the gearchange transfers onto the MZN box, that'll be a lovely one with the longer ratios.

The cambelt is a "while I'm there" sort of job, it's the chain that really needs doing as it's very noisy. With the exception of the switch to the MZN the other jobs are just age/mileage (ticked over 170k this week). The original box is a bit crunchy in 3rd and the clutch is showing signs of starting to go, so I'm just biting the bullet and doing it whilst I have the access from removing the suspension

If the chain is that noisy I’d suggest not driving it or even running the engine again until it’s done - your words suggest it’s right at the point of failure!
 
Started to plan how to get my new A2 back to its former glory.

It's the 1.4 SE, previously owned by @steve_c before he sadly passed away earlier this year. I had been storing the car for Steve's friends whilst they sorted the estate and bought the car off them yesterday.

My first priority is a new cambelt and starter motor, plus air con service and Oxygen sensor. Then a really good scrub so we can see which of the scrapes it sadly aquired whilst it was parked on a main road whilst Steph was in hospital can be polished out, and which will need a more profesional fix.

Steph loved his car and I am determined to honor his memory by getting him (who I have called Alan), back to the lovely condition he was in when I first met Steph a few years ago.

I am hoping to bring him to the Not Quite the Lakes social, if I can get the cambelt done in time 🤞

Today is new tyre day. After much chin scratching and post reading I decided I'd go for 205 45 17 to help reduce the revs slightly on the commute and give a little more give in the sidewalls.
I still have my pepperpot wheels fitted but I think summer might have arrived...
Just a little friendly advice, if you haven't bought them already, try to go for tyres with as low a load rating as you can get otherwise you may lose a fair amount of the comfort gain you would achieve by increasing the sidewall depth from 40 to 45 👍
 
Have a quandary.
My project car (2022 WOM-rebuilt engine with oil chain job, 40-odd thousand mile NTG gearbox) developed a sudden vibration on Friday teatime accelerating onto the local dual carriageway on the way home (I should stress not hammering it either!). 2nd gear from 2000rpm onwards and 3rd. Seems to go away at higher 3000s revs ~ above 45mph. Unrelated to engine speed. Had two new J&R driveshafts fitted in February after the driver side original exhibited spontaneous unscheduled disassembly of the CV joint rubber driving back to Scotland after New Year and the other was pretty worn looking. The gearbox is really smooth and the engine (with clutch out) revs all the way up to the redline without any obvious vibration other than the fact it is running. The wheel bolts are all secure.

In an ideal world it'll be something like a balance weight lost from a wheel - so the obvious first check would be to swap a pair of winter wheels onto the front to see if the vibration goes away. Apart from that and observing anything obviously loose while I have a wheel off - are there any other thoughts? I have a morbid fear of it being something like the differential or otherwise internal to the gearbox ; a driveshaft would be easy enough to resolve but they are new.

I have recent J&R driveshaft but have a noise like a dud CV joint. Is everyone convinced of the quality of these?

Hi Robin, I hope it is something nice, easy and cheap! Have you checked the dogbone? That can do some funny vibrations
