Today I.....

Al
Well I had a knock that evaded both me and my independent Audi garage. Took it to WOM and Rob immediately said it's the top rear mounts. I had just changed the shocks and springs but not the top mounts as I thought they were solid. But Rob showed me they are actually 2 metal halves with a rubber between. Mine had been knocking since the last full overhaul of the suspension. Must of been cheep duds.
Alan is so near the reason but no cigar I'm afraid

Nope, it was a loose nut on the front strut at the top, somehow it had either come loose or just settled over the year after fitting, the other side strut nut was also a bit loose but not allowing movement up and down.
Ahh so not the top mounts the actual shaft top not. Makes perfect sense! Shame no one just checked it when doing top mount check!! Joy

The top mount will only make itself known when the spring starts to boing as far as I know, the main nut at the top if loose will make the whole shock to move up and down causing the tap/ knock over slight bumps. Tightening the nut up will stop it moving up and down.

I wonder if that's what I've got going on with my Crystal TDI? WOM did the suspension about 5 years ago. Not all the time, but I do get what sounds like springs settling after some bumps especially with changes in camber.

Today I spent an illuminating couple of hours at @Ami ‘s workshop where I watched and learned as he did a bit of fettling on my FSi. First up he replaced the body colour grille with a black one that is the first stage of the transition back to the full authentic colourstorm look. On top of that he helped to (hopefully) fix the intermittent oil sensor warnings I’ve been getting. He had reason to believe it was likely to be caused by dirty contacts on the sensor and sure enough upon disconnecting it they were indeed filthy. I’d read it could also have been caused by a non-OEM sensor however we found it was a genuine one. I learned what a ****of a job refitting the undertray is. Also he managed to fix one of the rear seats which refused to fold. As suspected it was caused by the base not having been pushed completely flat so one of the catches hadn’t engaged, but he was much more successful than I was at fixing it. Finally he plugged in his scanner, as much out of interest as anything (still no recurrence of the EML), and it’s still showing the same 2 faults as before but neither seem to be causing any real issue as she’s running beautifully.
Many thanks to @Ami for generously giving up a large slice of his Saturday afternoon to help me out.
She’s booked in the paint shop this week… pictures of her reversion to colourstorm will follow.

I promised photos… here they are, fresh back from the paintshop. She needs a good general clean and polish now, and inevitably the work has made some of the blemishes on the original paint work look a bit worse, but I’m very pleased. Huge improvement on the previous look don’t you think?

looks Fantastic Malcolm, well done .

Afternoon all,

Since recently adding the a more presentable coolant reservoir to the Project EYV A2 I thought the Project EUD A2 could also do with similar treatment. I therefore obtained a spare coolant reservoir which has been outside in the elements for a few days UV light with powdered bleach inside of it. It was also cleaned out with some Krilock descaler beforehand too.

Here is the reservoir going through its cleaning process:

Here it is after some 72 hours of being soaked in the aforementioned products:

Not perfect but much better than what was currently fitted:

Below is a comparison of the 2 reservoirs (clean not fitted- dirty fitted):

Quick swap 10 minutes ago:

Looks a lot better and much easier to read the level:

Only lost about 100ml (if that) as I removed the 10mm nut, upper hose and the electrical connector before removing the lower hose, put my thumb over the lower port and pulled it away from the engine bay.

Now onto seeing if I can improve the dirty reservoir that was removed earlier!

Kind regards,

Tom

Today I tinkered a bit more with my spare engine.

I took out the injector loom, which was pretty straightforward, just a bit tricky getting the clips to go through the holes.

Got the injectors out too, also very straightforward, I was able to move them from side to side until they eased up and out.

I think both these jobs would have been much trickier with the engine in the car though..

I've never had the bottle to attempt a timing belt change, but I guess so long as you research and plan it well, and have the right tools, it's probably not that hard.

It seems like a tiny water pump on these.

After waiting for a knuckle splitter to arrive from the interweb I went full percussive maintence mode and hammered in a wedge into the knuckle. like …..works fine.
A few weeks back I got an inductive heater from my old friend Graham who passed away soon after. It’s brilliant, so opposite ends of the mechanic spectrum in play here.
A nice set of Bilstein B6 and H&R -30mm springs in the background ready to go on. The front shocks really are past their best. I’m looking forward to decent suspension. It was overdue a change out.
Onwards and upwards

George
