Today I.....

@Phil_B

That has to be the biggest fishing weights I have ever seen.πŸ˜„
Lol! They're jacking lugs so I can jack on them with the trolley jack, or use the jacking points and put axle stands under them. The A2 jacking points aren't parallel with the ground, but the bottom of these is.

car is back in the hands of offspring. Needed for a BBQ tomorrow (in 2C weather!). Amps replaced with Soundigital 400.4 and 400.2, so it's pushing around 400W to the sub and 4x 60W to the fronts. Sounds great!
Summer tyres on that, too, and man is it nice to work with the baby light rims of the A2 after the S-Cross... not looking forward to the Kodiak monsters :/

went to Stanford Hall show . First time at this show for me. Met several people from the A2OC group and added my car to the club stand for the first time ! Great show and nice to meet everyone.
Must try harder with my car and make sure it's at least clean next time .

Today, I woke up to see a neighbour has a visitor. In a silver 1.4 Tdi with OSS. No sign of life in the house yet.

Spent a couple of hours deep cleaning the bonnet flaps, Now to decide whether to keep the existing flat or change to the later slatted version.

I stripped this engine down a bit more, had the sump off today amongst other things..

I wasn't expecting to find this in the sump.

The chain drives the oil pump, but I guess it's main purpose must be as a counterbalance to the Crankshaft?

The chain must be very worn as the tensioner is actually pushing it so far over it is starting to eat into the casing!

I would check the Injector on the crusty cylinder, although get them all checked for this sort of rebuild. Is there a lip at the top of the Cylinder Bores, other than just Carbon?

There is a very very small lip, barely notieceable, but it's there. This engine has done at least 185,000 miles apparently.

I can't really justify rebuilding this engine myself, but I hope somebody will. So if anyone out there fancies a tdi engine rebuild project?

This is the much storied oil pump chain, it can indeed eat through the sump. Its relatively accepted that 180-200k miles and its time to swpa it out with new tensioners. Theres a guide on here but would be good to see another one! THe part kit is about Β£140 i think from febi..

The other check is to turn each piston to the, and measure the gap from the piston crown to block face. If the crusty piston is lower than the other 2 it could indicate Easy Start has been used, and shortened the Con Rod! The lower compression may cause carbon build up.

Good Afternoon,

I am struggling like mad trying to identify a part I think I need for my front suspension rebuild.

It is some sort of clip that sits on the top of the main damper cylinder just above the "saucer", you can see it here

When fitted to strut

It's function is to secure the bottom of the dust cover (gaiter) otherwise the bottom of the dust cover surely will just flop around and not prevent the ingress of water and grime onto the shiny rod like this..

This image is from an excellent thread by @Little Dog,

It is vaguely shown in the 7zap strut diagram but not identified as a separate part which means I am stuffed.

Plenty of images on here of the front strut that show it but rarely mentioned except the above thread. The best image I can find and I can nearly read the part number.

I would like to check before the rebuild that this retainer fits the Bilstein B6 damper I have bought as nothing comes with it.

Anyone an idea on part number or a source???

Thanks.

Andy

Today I had more jam than Hartley's and picked up a set of brand new still in the box roof bars at a ridiculously stupid price, goes to show there's still bargains out there to be found 🧐

Also a big thanks goes to Colin for collecting and delivering them for me πŸ‘

Today I replaced the door latch in Chad. The exterior handle has always been stiff, the door got stuck shut recently and yesterday the fuel flap refused to open! The new one is from eBay and is identical apart from an extra metal β€˜ear’ that has to be chopped off. It has transformed this door and is now really smooth and working nicely, for the money and hassle I wouldn’t bother messing soldering micro switches again.
