Today I.....

Yes, I'll be using M6 Rivnuts. The Rivnut are a fixed length as far as I'm aware, although I would approximate 10mm deep when compressed. For the bolts, I haven't done the work or even obtained the bolts yet. I plan to be using some around 15-20mm long, as there's no real reason for them to be longer unless they're being used as studs.

I've tried installing a couple of Rivnuts on a scrap piece of Aluminium. The correct tool is essential. I tried one with the tool and one without; the latter being impossible to stop the Rivnut from spinning. The tools are readily available from eBay etc. :)

Thank Matt. I watch a YouTube vid and it was apparent the tool was essential. About £12 and upwards on ebay.

I also looked at aluminium nuts and self locking bolts but I would have to be sure I (or a helper) can get access and hold the bolt head.

I also found these "16mm 19mm 29mm, BONDED TEK SCREW ALUMINIUM ROOFING WASHERS, EPDM RUBBER" http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16mm-19mm...hash=item19fe94a720:m:mMQfaYSFutWEMiOE5B2bUfQ They seem idea for spreading the load on the aluminium heat shields but will need to check for clearance. The shields feel very flimsy.

Thanks for that, Alan.

I'm struggling to find bolts that are suitable. I'm not sure if it'll be best to use bolts or studs, as Aluminium bolts with anything other than a small cap head are proving difficult to source, and they're expensive! :p

Regards,

Matt.

Another option would be to drill and tap and then Loctite in a piece of Aluminium studding. As it's only heat shield there's no significant loading applied.

Simon.

... I'm tired of this!

From now on, all passengers must take the shoes off and must not stretch their legs!

The legs-stretching can be allowed for some passengers :)

I'm pretty much decided on 16mm 304 Stainless bolts. From research, Stainless looks to be much of a problem on Aluminium sheeting than first thought. That said, it's a different story if you're using Aluminium bolts with Stainless sheets. :p

Matt.

Where did you get your plates from Jeffers? I need new ones. I have some of those Autohaus audi plate surrounds too, do you have one on the front, I haven't fitted mine because it looked a bit big.

I sanded and polished my headlights to remove the UV and stone chip damage.

I used grades 240, 400, 600, 800, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500 & 3000 wet and dry. I finished them with a rotary polisher using Mezerna medium cut polish and then finishing polish.

They have been transformed and were only bothering me because the lights were not that good in the dark. I've replaced the bulbs and have now done this, so I hope to see an improvement.

I've had them for some time now and can't remember the seller, however, I've just got new pressed metal plates to go on my TT from this seller on eBay, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Pair-...535494?hash=item3a9850cd86:g:urEAAOSwLVZV1Ncl they look equally as good in quality, I think they're all around the same price, but you may get cheaper, here's a pic of the front one, I think you are right and the surrounds do look big but they seem to fit in with the Storm black detail imo.
Cheers Jeff

Yes, I have used two different makes of plastic, chrome-plated rear surrounds and after only a few Months, they start to corrode and look tatty and pitted! It's just no use trying to polish them, so it's a replace and bin job! I am impressed with those surrounds that you're showing, though. If they are solid stainless-steel, then they should be durable and NEVER corrode! I'll go for them (well, one of them!)
I have never liked the idea of attaching the number-plate with screws and covers (even if the covers have been cleverly matched to the background). No, I use special, double-sided adhesive tape and position it for maximum adhesion. It is very powerful, extremely thin and there is just no-way that the plate is ever going to move! You are left with a completely smooth surface that is so easy to clean! It looks so much better, too. My next "project" is full and uniform back illumination for the rear number-plate. I have all the components, ready .... all that's missing is the time! Busy mowing the lawn(s) at the moment .... all 1.5 acres of them! That stainless-steel surround will be just Dandy for my project! Thanks!
