Today I finally satisfied myself that there isn’t anything wrong with Audrey’s fuel consumption.
I borrowed the car to run up to Exeter and back, a distance of 28 miles each way according to Google and a very hilly route. I kept the average speed to 65mph indicated but allowed it to decline and rise by 5mph each way on the hills, including some out-of-gear coasting on the steepest downhill gradients. Acceleration when applied was brisk but not excessive. The tyre pressures are at the full load settings as per the filler flap. The climate control unit was switched off (ie not even blowing - switched off using the button)

This seems to be normal for a TDi90 / ATL in winter, although I must admit I was hoping for a little more considering the six speed gearbox that’s fitted, giving a true 70mph at 2000 rpm in top - I suppose the benefit of this mod is therefore solely in decreased engine noise and wear rather than any fuel consumption improvement. I found at 65mph the DIS read 55mpg or so on the flat. Maybe it will nudge up a few mpg in warmer weather.
