Today I.....

I don't hence the wet DIY comment.

But she is a second car so can do
the head swap over a couple of weekends. Have some spare valves and new stem seals and gaskets are on their way (plus new tappets and arms).

How long does an engine swap take? Am guessing also a couple of days first time round?

Tempted to do the head swap tbh..
I did it with help from a friend whos done it before and I think one long day to do it all if you start from a point of bumper off/rad pack off and sat on axle stands. SO yeah two days easy with two people for one day and yourslef refittign everything the next day and doing coolant etc..

Today I fuelled up the TDI. It's been doing the daily work run 7 miles to work, A road to work & M55 on the way home plus lots of evening short runs (Dad's taxi) all with lights on wipers and heated seats, sometime heated heated screen & fans on etc
Tank to tank fill 55mpg. 👍

That’s about right for that type of driving and the time of the year. Mina as just dropped below 60 mpg on the dis which under reads anyway. Tank to tank I’m on 62.8 regular diesel

Interesting. I filled up the car earlier in the week and calculated just over 73mpg, 50/50 mix of town/minor roads and A/B roads, no motorway driving. TDI special edition, MZN box. I do a lot of miles, usually fill up a couple of times a week and have seen between 71mpg and 79mpg lately.

Keeping on topic, today I am going to put the new cambelt on the wife's car and hopefully put in the new engine mount (older style engine side, will require modification as it's from a Polo or Lupo, will let you know how it goes)

Your going totally different driving to Stan and myself. We are typically no more than 7 or 8 miles from cold to stopped
I can easily achieve low 70mpg on motorway or decent A / B roads

Very true. I also count myself lucky that living right on the south coast we've not seen a frost so far this year and the overnight temperature has rarely dropped into single digits, even if it has been rubbish weather more generally!

Nearly all my running in my TDI is my 22-mile commute through the Chilterns to the north-west of London. Mostly cross-country and keeping moving, with a bit of urban work for the charity food pickup from the supermarkets once a fortnight. I find my DIS is normally pretty accurate over a tankful against my calculated brim-to-brim figures, but this year I've not been resetting it every fill-up, to look at the longer-term average over however many miles it stores the information. This has gradually crept down from nearly 62 in the summer, to just under 60mpg.

It will drop a lot faster once the mornings are regularly cold enough to bring the Webasto in: during the winter I normally only get about 52-53mpg on a tankful. It's been on a couple of times so far this Autumn, but it's mostly still not quite cold enough to trigger it. Because the engine takes so long to warm up (even with a new thermostat and temp sender at WOM this year) in 8-10 degrees C, I tend to use my Volvo more frequently, which produces more than enough heat for the engine and the cabin :)

That’s alien to any of us petrol owners! High 40’s in an FSI with mixed driving, although sticking at 60 mph can improve that to high 50’s.

I do often wonder if a petrol A2 would have been more efficient as a small turbocharged petrol rather than fancy FSI, but we'll never know. The petrol hybrid concept that Honda use (electric drive and engine only mechanically engaged at m/way speeds) gets 70+ mpg so in an A2 could be even better.

What was wrong with it?
Hi, it didn't fire up, likely because the glow pin was all caked up, it have fault of the pin not igniting. I refit one I bought from here which was correctly sold as working. I'll repair my one another time as parts are expensive about £130 for a pin and gauze burner set I believe.

Today I narrowly avoided hitting a car driven by an elderly gentleman, who pulled out in front of me without looking. He seemed very confused and was clearly not in control of his vehicle, Luckily both the car behind and I made emergency stops and we all avoided ’certain disaster’. I’ve noticed that people often pull out in front of my A2, but hardly ever when I am driving larger modern cars. However not even sure this old chap would have seen me, even if I’d been driving a bus…

I've noticed a similar phenomena, generally when I'm in a smaller car people will do far less predictable and far more aggressive things than when I was in my E39 5 series. This is true for both of my A2's and mini R53 Mini. Was also true for the Triumph GT6 I had, but that thing was so short you could almost excuse some people for looking straight over it!

I used to drive a smart roadster coupe, which seemed to be easily spotted because of how distinctive it looks. Mind you, even though it was low, it was still possible to lose an even lower Ariel Atom in the side mirrors. Perhaps we all drive more defensively / proactively in smaller cars by default, as the reverse seems to be true the larger and less involving a car gets..

Cleaned this part on a 120,000 mile golf plus, might help the general running

I find good daytime running lights make a big difference to ‘presence on the road’. I have put LEDs in my front fogs, and have them as DRLs, and people definitely let me in and don’t pull out much anymore.

Can you elaborate on what's involved? Have also seen indicators added to the fogs, very swish!!

I have had fogs changed to DRLs (@timmus upgrade) and found it has no difference to idiots pulling out in front of me😱. I personally feel that until it is made mandatory that anyone that has a driving licence must undertake an eye test every 2 years this problem will continue.
