Trip to the TT Shop

I have just returned from my trip to the TT shop. I had a 4 wheel alignment done on there hunter hawkeye machine thing.

Any way if any of you read my MOT rant post you'll know that my front tyres were chewed up within 9 months on them being on the car.

Now I know why......

After I fitted my suspension I took it to Blackboots/Wheels in motion to have a 4 wheel alignment done on there hunter machine thing. All seemed fine, drove around for the 9 months till the MOT and.......... helloooo, both tyres bald on inside tread...... MOT failed.

Now popping it on the machine at TTS today revealed that the two front wheels were basically miles out, but equally on both sides to give a total of -46' of toe out (so basically -23' both sides).

They should in fact be within the range of 09' to -01'.

All now nicely adjusted and car driving well again.

The guy at the TT shop did say that it looks like it had been set that way as it was so equal, as racing over speed bumps and going down pot holes etc would normally put out one side a lot more than the other and also settling suspension causes the wheels to become more toe in.....

So all I can conclude from that is that the people at Blackcircles/Wheels in motion completely messed up big time and cost me a set of tyres in the process. Wont be going there again any time soon.

The guys at TTS are very good. Happy to explain everything and chat cars. Can highly recommend them, and I will certainly be using then again when needed.

That's good news John. It sounds like blackboots messed that up. At least you know they are correct now. So hopefully you will not be eating through tyres now!

Glad you happy John. My wheel alignment experience at Stealth was also sub-standard. I remember that Chris raved about the TT Shop and it seems that you are also very pleased. I'm happy you chose to go there and after your positive comments I am sure more of us will be visiting them - me quite soon!

Indeed tony, im very happy. They were very down to earth people.

One thing The TTs guy said was that all VAG cars do drift to the left on there own, as I know this was something you mentioned that stealth didnt sort out, but apparently it cant be unless the steering is de-centred.

One thing I will add is that these hunter alignment machines have 2 settings for A2's.

Standard and Sport.

Anyone who gets an alignment done on a hunter and has lowered the car on FSD's / bilsteins (in my case) should choose the sport setting, as its slightly different to the standard setting.

I believe this could be where blackboots/wheels in motion could have gone wrong, although I cant see that there should be any major toe difference as the car is basically the same.

Hi John, I'm having the same problem with the inside edge of my Tyres, how much did Tt shop charge please?

Cheers

John

I used The TT Shop when I had an A2 (wish I still had!) and have used them for alignment on the A6. They're fantastic.

Now I'm not going to be biased, as I also own a TT which I get serviced at the TT shop, but my company is based in the industrial unit next door but one to Wheels in Motion. I know the owners fairly well and if they thought that there was someone unhappy with an alignment the either Jay or Tony would want to put it right.
Did you think to make the management aware???
they are a good bunch there and are well thought of on most other forums, especially the MX5 ones

In this months Audi driver magazine there is a interesting article on the TT shop following a 40k service onba TT.

There is also a interview with A2 sumo's mate Alan McNish talking about his huge crash at Le Mans

Well I didnt seen the point in moaning to them because:
1) It was 8 months after they did it and they would probably use the excuse that potholes and speed bumps had thrown it out, or suspension settling caused it, even though I know this isn't the case as it was symmetrically wrong.
2) I dont intend on going back there again, as I cant trust there workmanship, so why make a fuss.

When you say interesting David, what do you mean??

HI John.

I just thought they had a very good write up. They know what they are doing and give a very good service. But I don't know if the reporter watching and writing article had anything to do with it lol

I will stick the mag in my car and bring it to Aitp so you can have a read.

TT shop

Hi John

My tyres have gone really badly worn on the inside edge now and seem to be worsening daily, ESP as I do about 200 miles a day at the mo, it's a long trip to tt shop for me but am planning to go maybe sat or next week, then get new front tyres, just wondered, how can you be sure this company have gotten your suspension setup correct this time? Is it just a case of see how your new tyres wear? Can you feel a noticeable difference to drive? In particular cornering over an uneven road seems to "pull" or "tug" on the steering wheel which seems worse at slower speed and tighter corners(ie a 90 degree country lane with stutter bumps). My gf said why can't I go to a local garage, I said cos I'm going to go Withnthe advice of a a2oc member, she just doesn't get it lol. I had fsd's on for about 5,000 miles now so I guess they're settled in?

Cheers

John

If you are getting alignment get the tyres done before you go, not afterwards. Otherwise the settings will be out by a small margin.

Posted from my iPlop...

Yes, you need to get the tyres done first as above.
I know they have done it properly as they gave me a before and after print out, and had a long chat with me about certain paramters / adjustments...... and yes the car now drives much better, Steering wheel is straight.
I will be checking my tyres every few months to monitor the wear anyway, and he advised getting the wheels aligned yearly or at least everytime the tyres are changed to ensure max tyre life.
