Tyre recommendation for 17" sport wheels.

Hi all,
I have just had my RS4 style summer wheels refurbished and fitted with Kuhmo Ecsta le sport tyres, of the 205/40 size.

The tyres are recommended for high end sports vehicles and for the A2, can be obtained for £55 each.

Fantastic tyres and although i'm still scrubbing them in, there is none of the crashing and banging that i had with the old Runway (should be run - away) tyres.

I can thoroughly recommend these, especially at that price..

'hope this helps.

G.

Price is good but... I found them horribly noisy after the first couple of mm had been worn off.
I've just put DUNLOP SP Sport Maxx RT 205/45 R17 88W on mine and they're whisper quiet (tyre label 66dB), comfier than my winter 16s (somehow) and they look good
But they cost £430 fitted, gulp.

The Dunlops look great but does anyone have any views on the cheaper end of the scale such as Hankook V12 evo or Avon? Trying to make decision on what to go for when I get the wheels refurbed, will keep Dunlops in mind as a backstop.

I have some great mid range tyres I put on my C/S last year, on highly recommended by my tyre guy and they are brilliant in wet too, although I do try and avoid driving in it lol, I'll post a pic up when I get home of the make etc!!
Cheers Jeff

I have the Hankook V12s James in 215/40/17 guise. The grip is very good in both wet and dry conditions, road noise is also very good and aesthetically they look the part too. The down side is that they offer a firm ride IMHO. Having driven Mark's car on Sunday, the tyres he has on are more forgiving I would say. Perhaps drop him a PM if he doesn't read this, as I forget the brand (signs of ageing). If you need to undertake parallel parking often, the Hankook V12s offer little to no rim protection even on the slightly wider tyre, but I am running 7.5 BBS vice 7 stock Sport rims, so they may fair better here. The brand Mark is using offer terrific rim protection by comparison; one of the best I have seen.

Overall I would recommend the Hankook as a high-end product. Whilst they can't quite compete with some of the bigger brands, the price point is more attractive and I don't feel they are way behind the premium brands either. Hope this helps; somewhat.

Cheers Jeff, that would be great.

If anyone has any wheel refurb specialists they use nationally or in Scotland that they would be happy to endorse that would also be great
Think Dave 'Special Edition' uses a refurb company in Yorkshire, good quality if I remember, he would know if they do delivery, naitionwide!

Sorry James... I appreciate Jeffs suggestion but LSD work out of shed near Castleford Rugby League ground and I don,t think they even have a computer. This is how they keep their costs low and its generally cash only.

Hi Gary - G, as Darren mentioned i'm using premium Goodyear Asymmetric 2 tyres which handle very well yet has some degree of comfort in the sidewalls. I have them on the S6 (255/40 X 17) after doing lots of research 3 or so years ago and they performed extremely well up in Scotland on a tour 18 months ago up there with Like minded Audi nuts. Not once did they push wide or loose grip in the pouring rain on Scottish highland back roads doing speeds that just can't be repeated here. They are as good in the dry and have a great rim protector on them. I could have chosen the Asymmetric 3 which has just come out last year but the rim protector on them is no way near as good as the Asymmetric 2's and as you know the 17 A2 Sport wheel is very vulnerable to being curbed. I accidentally grazed and went up a very high kerb, very slowly, near my sons school the other week. There was chaos around at a tight T junction bend, people and traffic, and i expected to see the alloy truly Fubered. Not a bit of it thankfully. I got mine from Camskill for £276 delivered. You could get Michelin pilot sport 4's, for £400 plus but is it worth buying that sort of top tyre when the A2 is never in a month of sundays going to push that tyres envelope. The Asymmetric 2's are an overkill but at the price are worth it and has transformed the car hugely from the cheap tyres that were on it when we bought it. Hope that helps. :)

Took your advice and got some Asymmetric 2's, thanks for all the helpful advice!!

Glad you got sorted James and apologies for not getting back sooner with a pic of mine, didn't get home till dark!!!
Cheers Jeff

Hi Jeff, apologies for not waiting, as you can see by my post time it was quite late/early. I wanted to get the wheels refurbed and mounted up with tyres before the Scottish event next weekend so had to move quickly when I had realised how short a time that was :)

You won't be disappointed. ;)

I am a huge fan of Goodyear Assymetric 2s. I have had them on my R32, and Alli has them on her Alfa Breda Spider. In both cases the difference from the previous tyres was night and day.

i will be getting them on the Crystal Blue car when I wear out the dunlops. Just a question of the best size. I see Darren has 215/40, if thought of 205/45 or stay standard at 205/40. Decisions, decisions!

just my 2c worth.

I opted for 205/45 and just have enough clearance on standard springs with mud-flaps! Given that your car is lowered, I'd be wary of 205/45, see if anybody is running them with your spring set up first.

That's a good point! Let's see what people are running.
Thanks
