Uneven tyre wear

We had the same problem on both our Lupo 3L's. It was eventually cured by reducing the toe out setting:

Hi RAB,

Thanks for the advice, though me and the mechanic are a bit unsure as to what to do with the toe setting. You say to reduce the 'toe out', but the information from the Autodata database says the wheels should be set to 'toe in' and not 'toe out'.
The figure given is 8' toe in +/- 10'. I take this to mean from 2' toe out to 18' toe in - which is a fair range. Our car is dead on 8' toe in at the moment. Would you advocate increasing the toe in from there?

Generally, FWD cars are set toe-out and RWD cars are toe-in, so I would check somewhere else. The correct figure for your car is that which allows the front wheels to be parallel under traction. The 'recommended' setting is somewhat idealised. VAG seem to be unduly pessimistic about the amount of play in their steering mechanisms. My toe-out set up was arrived at by trial and error and using Trakrite. It differs from the recommended setting but is the same on both cars.

Best of luck,

RAB

Does anyone have any different figures for the tracking setting for an A2 SE then? The garages use sources such as Autodata for all makes, so it would be a surprise if it were wrong!

This is the Audi spec - Toe angle at each wheel (specification when checking adjustment, unladen) 4′ ± 5′

Cheers Spike
