Use of text speak

Text speak is killing the English language. I have never used it and never will. Call me a grumpy old man if you like but I make a point of not bothering to respond to posts or PMs where the poster can't be bothered writing properly.

I don't even respond to text messages written in 'text speak' and all mine are written in English. With predictive text there's no excuse.

Mind you predictive text so p***s me off  too! I resent a machine constantly incorrectly guessing what i wish to write!!!! Another rant over!

why do i feel like this is pointed towards me slightly? I text alot, and now and then a couple of words are written in "text" in a post, its just habit. Also maybe some people are in a rush and just want to chuck a quick post on the site befor they go to work, or they have a baby they need to see to,
Iv notice a post on here before and it seems like there is a bit of bullying on this site. I'v had cheeky remarks over my spelling before and I'v noticed it happen to others even tho there spelling mistake is easily readable.
This is a good owners club but its being let down by snobs that fink they are better than every one els! My spelling and computer skills arn't the best, that bad in fact i don't no how to install the spell check software, but to the advantage of a2 owners i am very good with cars so i will always offer some help if i can, and hope you can help with bits i can't.
id like to see some one take the mickey to my face about my lack of skills with spelling and on the pc! i thought thes childish fings stoped in school and people helped rather than laugh and moan at them.
But not to worry I will stop posting on this site now so i dont burden you with my accidental text speak and bad spelling i hope im not the only one that feels this way!

If you feel persecuted then I'm sure we are all a little bit sorry, but your blatant use of text speak (and no, it wasn't just the odd word) triggered this thread off in the first place.

So you're not the best speller - then improve!

It's not vital to have the best of anything, but it's always nice to try to better yourself.

As to bullying, no, I don't think you are being bullied, as your name has never been mentioned in relation to any of this. What the A2OC prides itself on is the freedom given to members to say what they like, as long as it's not offensive or foul - even wrong posts are perfectly acceptable - someone will be along to right them soon enough!

If you want to take your ball home, then that is your decision - you aren't the first and you probably won't be the last.

All that is asked is that you write your posts in a way that if not grammatically correct, at least shows that you're trying. This is the International A2OC, so it makes it a lot easier for people who don't speak English as a first language to read the posts if they are written more or less correctly.

Fink is not a word - you mean think
Fing is not a word - you mean thing

That is just lazy and unhelpful.

I can understand bad punctuation such as Ive instead of I've (but even then, you miss the 'e') and to an extent, bad spelling of difficult words (but else isn't tricky is it?).

Your thinly veiled threat with regard to challenging someone to be cheeky to your face is not helpful and even more childish that the percieved mickey taking of your posts and yes, I would (and have!) expressed my thoughts to posters in the flesh.

I am not a snob and I don't think that asking for things to be done correctly is snobbish - would you call a client a snob if you badly fitted their bodywork and they complained?

If you choose to leave or lurk, then use the time you have free to brush up on your writing - it'll pay dividends in more areas of life than just this site!

Cheers,

Mike

i agree wot a patronising tw*t i would like to see you talk to me like this face to face!
"thanks" for making me feel even worse about my self iv noticed you have been quite patronising in a lot of posts! my text speak is not constant and on purpose or lazy some times I'm in a rush and don't have time to check my post. you can clearly read wot i am saying in my posts, the odd one has been bad but people still under stand and reply.
granted you do no your stuff but get your head out of your a** and stop finking your it and above the rest of us and stop making people feel low!
your just a fat boffin that was clearly bullied at school i don't see why anyone would let you get away with talking to them the way you have to me, face to face!

My thread wasn't aimed at anyone specific so dont be so touchy. However i am entitled to pass an opinion and am pleased at the overwhelming support for similar views. If you wish to leave the forum so be it, however Mike is actually offering advice which you should reflect on and if you are struggling to find spellcheck on your PC ( i too am an IT illiterate) I am sure someone on here will point you in the apropriate direction. Good luck!

well apparently MY posts are wot triggered this according to "Mr Skipton" if a post is clearly readable but the spelling is wrong or their "text" "txt" speak is clearly readable then why moan about it! your just being stuck up and pathetic maybe your just getting a kick out of putting people (me) down!.

"but your blatant use of text speak (and no, it wasn't just the odd word) triggered this thread off in the first place."
Mr Skipton's words, perfectly punctuated i must say. lmao "text speak" for laugh my a*s off!

I resent the implications of your comments however the only person who is putting you down is yourself demonstrated by your reaction to a thread which I started without reference to any particular member.

Would it not be more mature to accept the majority of members on this forum simply do not like text speak style posts and try and respond in a positive mature manner instead of your 'everyone is picking on me and stuck up so there' attitude. It does you no favours. i am sure there are forums ( such as the AON which I also frequent) where such a style is 'the norm' and can be quite funny at times, however the majority of members on the A2OC forum simply do not like it! There are forums ( MGRover amongst others) where it is simply banned and such posts removed and before you suggest it reflects 'stuck up' members I can assure there are plenty of young MG ZR owners who post and seem able to use a reasonable interpretation of the Queens English.

Now in the spirit of moving on as they say, If you have been offended by this thread then I apologise insofar as it wasn't aimed at you specifically, however my views are otherwise unchanged and will remain so. have a good weekend and enjoy your a2!

The thing I'm mostly annoyed about is Skipton's reply to my post, all i said was I feel it was aimed at me, I fink it was you that said in one of my posts that you can't understand my post's, this is why i feel its towards me as this post followed shortly after! i do not mean to use text some times its just habit, usually its my spelling that is the problem and sometimes my spelling mistake looks like I'm using "TEXT" speak wen I'm not. id like to hear from the other people that Skipton has upset before because iv noticed it a thew times now! if your thinking why I'm spelling well is because I'm on brothers computer with spell check!

your just a fat boffin that was clearly bullied at school i don't see why anyone would let you get away with talking to them the way you have to me, face to face!

Good grief - you nip away for the weekend to drive an R8 :D and what greets you on return to the friendly forum

Scott, you must accept the majority view that text speak is not appreciated on the A2OC. Whilst some of Skip's comments were a bit close to the wire - it was in response to your increasingly aggresive and narrow posts. The excerpt I have quoted above is both personal and offensive. I am offended. I am sure others will be as well. Remember you are the one who accused A2OC members of bullying you, when your response has been aggresive and confrontational. Get a grip pal. This is a great forum - accept some constructive criticism and lets keep it that way. M.

Thankyou Murdo for your input. To avoid further upsetting of members can I ask the moderator to draw this thread to a close now my original comment has been justified by the tone and content of ALL responses............ in future i will chosse less contentious topics for debate and views............

Whilst Murdo is right in seeing some of my reply as being close to the bone, I don't retract anything I've said, as nothing was untrue or derogatory to the best of my knowledge.

Scott, you have the audacity to say that my comments on your spelling prowess should have been left in the playground, then turn
round and call me a fat twit who was bullied - sticks & stones my friend, sticks and stones.

Oh, and for the record, I am 6'2" and 16 stones, so hardly a bloater. No-one referred to your posts either or intended having a go, I only said that your posts triggered the discussion on text speak.

As requested, I will now close this thread. Murdo, don't be offended by what has been said, I'm not, or to borrow someone elses word:

Bovvered??!!

Cheers

mike

Just one last thing I never once said i am being bullied i said i have seen it on the site! also my argument is being steerd towards my text speak wen i have said i do use text speak occasionally without realising, wot Im not happy with is that i am not the best speller in the world and i do try and my mistakes are readable but skipton is being patronising to me so i have every to say wot i like to him, thank you to AGENT006 for seeing my side of things.
wot i said about skipton was out of order but i will not apologise i didn't see him sparing my feelings in his comments.
il leave it at this
does no one have anything better to do than moan about, in most cases perfectly readable text speek spelling mistakes?
maybe you need a hobbie..................
