VAG COM + cable

Hi,
could someone please help me with the choice of the cable for the VAG COM software? I've read a few posts about that and usually people say that the cheap cables are no good. On the other hand I'm not really willing to pay ~300 EUR for the cable just to use it 1-2 times a year.

then a cheap null modem cable with a connector adapter is enough, and they should be dirt cheap on the 'bay. Like €10.

The real problem is with USB adapters.

But I suppose that solution will only work with VAG COM only till version 4.09, right?
The VAG software newer than that needs a dongle in the cable,am I correct?
