As a new member to the forum and a proud owner of an A2 I would like to ask your advice on the following:
I am currently getting approx 47-50 mpg (mixed driving) from my 1.4 petrol, is this about right?
is there an Audi audio cassette holder that can be fitted?
Can the 1.4 petrol be re-chipped? is so where can I have it done?
I want to upgrade the speakers in my car, it's the 1.4 standard (speakers in the front door only) i want to use the existing locations and possibly put some in the rear doors as well. Any advice? By the way I'm not a DIY person.
Could I bolt on a CD player?
yours in anticipation

Now wheres my welding torch [)].

Wow - a lot of questions...all at once, we're not used to this!

I am currently getting approx 47-50 mpg (mixed driving) from my 1.4 petrol, is this about right?

- Sounds ok to me but I have a TDi so I'm not the best person to ask.

Is there an Audi audio cassette holder that can be fitted?

- I've never heard of an Audi accessory like this and anything else may look tacky when stuck in the A2 interior. I'd just stick with your glovebox for now.

Can the 1.4 petrol be re-chipped? If so where can I have it done?

- The 1.4 engine can definitely be tweaked. I can't give you all the info now, but there should be some somewhere on the A2OC site (www.Audi-A2.co.uk) - look in the marketplace section or on ABT or AmD's webpages, and before you commit to anything check what discounts are available as an A2OC member (provided you have joined up!)

I want to upgrade the speakers in my car, it's the 1.4 standard (speakers in the front door only) i want to use the existing locations and possibly put some in the rear doors as well. Any advice?

- You are able to fit non standard (ie non-Audi) speakers in the holes in the back doors. For this you need a speaker adapter kit which is available from companies such as www.incardiscount.co.uk As far as I know it can be tricky to get the grills off and it is also likely that you will need to run the wires from the head unit to the back doors - so it may be better to let a professional (not necessarily Audi) do the job.

By the way I'm not a DIY person.

- Don't worry, we won't hold it against you!

Could I bolt on a CD player?

- Not sure about bolting anything on, but you certainly can take out your existing Audi stereo and put in a different make of stereo. If you only have a cassette player now, forget about what Audi say about not being able to fit a CD player. They said that about my A2 and offered to charge me £1000 for the priviledge of doing the work! I bought a Kenwood Mask CD player, fitted it myself all for under £300. Again you'll need a harness adapter lead and fascia adapter for the plugs/wiring/fitting and this can again be bought from the site above (http://www.incardiscount.co.uk/acatalog/Shop_Fitting_Accessories_19.html)

Hope that helps!

Stuart.

I don't know about MPG - but I have a petrol SE and on a full tank I vary between 225 miles for purely urban London driving upto 325 miles for motorways.

My 2000 mile A2 is returning 36 on mainly town driving. I know Vauxhall do a DIN size 6 cassette holder that you may be able to slot in your spare dash slot, but do look into it.
As for the cd changer, I was quoted £600 for a changer, fitting, new rear panel to house changer etc by my Audi dealer.....I'd go for an MP3 dash unit instead!.

Good luck.

I used to get 35 to 40 out of my petrol so you are doing well at 47 to 50.

I looked into chipping the petrol.
Several companies claim to have a chip available, but generally they only give a 10% improvement, i.e about 8 bhp - probaly not really noticeable. You will find links to most of these on the A2 club website.
AMD are working on a re-chip at the moment. If anyone can get a decent improvement then they can. Try www.auto-amd.com. There's nothing listed for the A2 petrol at the moment, but email them for info.
Interestingly the Polo has two versions of the 1.4 petrol engines, both with apparently identical stroke etc, but one gives 75bhp the other gives 100bhp. I tried to find out the difference between them but drew a blank.

Good luck with your tuning hunt.

When chipping, please also remember to think of your insurance premiums - these are modified cars and most insurance companies try to stay clear of them.

Dear mr.Factor,
Please explain LMFAO - are you swearing at me?
You musn't take me literally - I really don't mean that I'm going to get my spanners and electric drill out and hang it on the dash, now that would be silly.
kind regards

hehe LMFAO = Laugh My (you can fill in the F) Ass Off, dont take offense it was just funny what you said, I'm sure you didnt mean it to sound that way but it did come across that way, and I pictured someone (You) going into your A2 hacking the hell out of the dash and hammering in a CD player with some big chunky steel bolts, crazy I know but thats the wawy my insane mind works [)].

Hi Chaps,(I don't think there are Chapesses in the A2OC are there)
Now you've all stopped LMFAO about the CD player (Don't worry Bob, I asked the question a while back aswell), I would like to draw you attention to
www.superchips.co.uk (if no one has before).

To save you digging into the website,

A2 1.4 TDI ,+30BHP Once chipped, +26lbft Torque (cost of £511)
A2 1.4 Petrol , +8BHP Once chipped, Torque no listed (cost £293.75) (See Polo section)

Its also interesting that the warranty covers most things the manufactuer doesn't.

I also noticed that the VW+Audi Centre in Gloucester is a fitting centre for them!.

Thats my ramblings over.

Craig.

Maybe you'd try this one for the petrol: http://www.wetterauer.nl/specificaties/audi/AudiA21416V75pk.html

It's in Dutch, but what they say is your petrol goes from 75 to 90 bhp, torque goes from 126 Nm to 146, and it saves a little fuel (0,5 liter/100 km). Speed is up to 185 km/h.
I must say, I have my doubts: underneath the picture of the A2 they're talking about the petrol-engine as if it has a turbo??? I know the diesel has one, but I've never discovered it on my petrol....

Strange that in the blurb it claims up to a 30% increase in bhp and torque for td engines, yet they only note between 20-30hp increases for each engine, whether it is a 75hp A2 or a 180hp Beemer. Hmmm.

And with the warranty, I can see it being quite a struggle to prove that the chip caused the damage.

Can you fit these things yourself? Or because you have to disconnect the battery, the ECU has to be reset by a garage. Will an Audi garage notice the change when they come to service it - coming up on their systems diagnosis report?

Bob,

Don’t worry, if you hang around on the forum long enough you will get use to the fact of experiencing a few jives, but generally speaking I reckon 99.99% of responses/comments are made in a jovial spirit.

Regarding your fuel consumption I have to say from my own experiences that you are doing extremely well. On reasonable motorway runs (say 30 mile) I might have got 42/45 mpg, but I never ever achieved this on mixed driving.

In terms of “chipping” I personally think the gains are small for petrol engines – with stinky diesels being much better. That said I understood from a recent “Top Gear” tv programme that chipping can reduce the life of the turbo by 50% - so if true the concept does not turn me on.

Regarding the warranty issues, my dealer is offering the superchips upgrade for their customers cars. They advised me that it only invalidates the 3rd year of the warranty, and then only on the turbo and injection system related parts. Not sure how it would work in reality as they could just blame any failure on these bits anyway!!

I have a petrol and usually get 45 mpg or 10 miles per litre. I only beat this by driving very slowly or increasing the tyre pressure. With the pressure at 38 psi I was able to get 49mpg consistently and up to 52mpg.

You generally can't fit the chips yourself. They are soldered to the circuit board and need specials tools and skills to change.
Also, be aware that companies like SuperChips have a standard chip that is fitted to all engines, wheras AMD tune your car on their rolling road and adjust the mapping to suit your particlualr engine. It costs more, but you get a 'before and after' plot of torque and power.
It's interesting the early wear of the turbo has been suggested by Top Gear. My understanding of engines like the 110 and 130 golf TDi's, is that the only difference is the engine ECU chip. This could also be true of the 150, although that my have a different dump valve fitted. If you talk to AMD they can provide a lot of informatino on reliability, and they also offer a reasonable warranty.

Some Audi dealers will honor the full warranty if you have the car chipped through them. It shouldn't cost any more, as they get a discount from the chip company.
