Very annoying wobble (actually extremely annoying) help :(

Hi John,
it's worn enough now to knock when you move the wobble engine by hand. The gears have got notchy of late also and it's had a feel of momentum at work on right hand bends for a while. Also, it's felt like something other than suspension has been moving on bumpier stuff, all in all some sympoms I've had on other cars but they were cheaper and easier to change so got done sooner :)
I think the engine mount by the cambelt may be a bit the worse for wear because the gearbox one hasn't been doing it's fair share but I'll get the 'box one done first and see how it is then.

Cheers,

Bruce

my dogbone mount change has made a huge difference. Feels like a completely different car. I still have vibrations, though, and I'm wondering just how many kms this will last if I don't make more changes.

The change was easy - undo the bracket off of the Polo mount and replace the rubber / metal part. Sorted.

I'll probably check the mounts of the part at the same time with Awesome to see if I can get a Poly mount from a Polo to fit for better handling. Need to change the track rod ends and the wishbone bushes next and preferably Thursday at that....

Hi Bret
What is the 'dogbone mount' and where is it located. A picture if you have one would be good

Thanks

Yay! Gearbox mount changed, noticed the difference as soon as I out it in first gear to pull away! It's improved everything - pulling away, stopping, ride comfort, steering - but it's also shown how bad the others are, probably overstressed by the knackered geabox mount.. New engine mount and dogbone (the previous one was a second hand Polo one to check it fitted) are in the car awaiting fitting. After nigh on 30k of ownership it may finally drive as it should....
The gearbox mount is far less easy than the dogbone/pendulum or engine mount to do though, it took the tech 2.5 hrs or so with the aid of a lift so not something to try at home.
It's also made me happy because I though it was at least part of the cause but at £200 fitted was reluctant to try it on the offchance and I'd been told by a couple of garages/mechs it couldn't be that. Smug mode is now suitably enabled (especially as I was correct with the geo as well), I just wish I had a clue about OSS. I'll try not to think about that for a while...

excellent, thanks. I'm going to start with 8Z0199851R (which is around €67 + VAT minus discounts), and I'd love to be able to order this stuff when I talk to the parts guy tomorrow. I ordered some bits in April and they got back yesterday to them as being "undeliverable".... among them is the new thermostat housing and then I'll order the fresh front wishbone bushes while I'm at it. The track rod ends will be bought here as they seem silly-cheap.

The numbers for mine are;
gearbox mount 8Z0 199 555Q £68.66 + vat
engine mount 8Z0 199 167AS £96.95 + vat
dogbone (Polo) 6Q0 199 851AK £25.29 + vat (A2 partnumbered one is about £100 more!)

Various bolts & washers, say £15 worth.

I haven't done the track rod ends on mine (yet!), they seem fine and about that then leaves is rear axle bushes...

I did another 300km on Friday and it was fine - much better than to Helsinki on Thursday - weight makes a difference (!). Today I did another (emtpy) 25km on gravel at high speeds (80km/h) and it's way too floaty for that, especially when the back waggles when you step off the power and onto the brakes.... the dogbone mount I just left in place and swapped the minimum necessary. Thanks for the tip!

I'll get some ordering done on Monday.

quick update here: the track rod ends are changed, but it appears that the subframe got moved in the process, so though things are much better, I now have a wonky wheel, meaning ESP now kicks in at 80..... and turns off again when I stop accelerating. At 120 it's not a problem.....

the wobble is much better, it's now only on braking, which is the way it "should" be. I think I might change the gearbox mount anyway, later, but since the disks / pads are the originals (10 years old in January) I don't have a problem with them being warped.

Mine's booked in on Monday for a new engine mount and another dogbone...a poly one this time so should be Tight at the end.
I think it's a case of the new gearbox shifting load to already worn components that have now cried enough.
I've done 30k since I've had and I'm now a tad nervous that after all this it'll need/want bottom balljoints...that are part of the wishbone. Insert expletive here.

Ten years   The benefits of smooth driving.

Mine is finally "cured"; the rubber bush "sorted" it, along with the track rod ends. Thing was that teh screw holding the wishbone in place appears to have ripped out several threads, so now there's a bigger screw in there and hey presto, it's great. Along with the tracking done, it was a real pleasure to drive back.

It's looking good so far :D
The left hand driveshaft has been changed and wow, what a difference
There are no visible signs of problems or damage to it but at some point I'll get it stripped down and inspected, as much out of curiosity.
It does feel like it would benefit from the changing the right hand as well though ...
Getting picky maybe but hey, I'm liking it again now and want to take it on long journeys again - well, except for the noise that Audi still haven't rung me back about

Hi Pal,

Ive had the same issue since buying my a2 a couple of months ago.. chap told me it needed droplinks and tracking etc .. the knoking was serious too... pulling all over the place.. I didnt mind as it was priced with this in mind .. I had the car looked at and drop links changed ,, tracking, toe, balancing but not the camber ..its off by quite a bit and it would need to go Audi - Bokked in for 15th Jane.. However .. there was a marked improvement when that all got done.. but nothing great and still pulled ... but great on the motorway and on very flat roads I cant notice it and feels great ... its got much worse in a short time and about the same as when i got it.

It does feel like something is seriously wrong...yet two garges have failed to spot it .. hence going to Audi ... not taking it to another idiot. It crashes and pulls mostly feels like the passanger side front wheel about to fly off.. it like the wheel pivoits on the hub with nothing stopping it from wobbling ...it very disappointing as otherwise its the most fun Ive had driving a car .. I had many mostly company stuff.. including an A2 petrol around 2005.. this 1.4td has been remapped and lowered..

I am going to waitto see if audi can tell me what up and how much .. Id love to keep it so I hope its not too much.. mean time I have ordered a new A3 salon tfsi arriving 3rd jan... via my new job ...

I really hope you get that sorted .. let me know what you find out ... I keep you guys posted on Audi's results :(

Just as a matter of interest, which wheels do you have? if it's the 17" sports wheels then worth checking they are straight and true.
