Votex rear spoiler - potential source for non-original

Not yet Steve, but I wil open the thread when we have confirmed that the spoilers can be built to the right quality.

It may take a couple of days to get the first response, if that is good and he believes he can do it, I will open the thread to gauge interest, but we will not have a price guide for a couple of weeks after that, I believe. When we do have a price I can then start to make a list of people who definitely want one.

So just a little while longer.

Maybe consider taking deposits if he says he can do them. Then you have a firmer interest than people just saying 'yeah, I'll have one', then backing out later on. Might help with knowing true demand.

I don't think that we will have any trouble selling these, even if people do change their minds.

I will not take any deposits until there is a firm price, it would be wrong to take a deposit when the buyer doesn't know the price.

I don't even like taking deposits from members at any stage, so I will avoid it if at all possible.

But it is a very good suggestion, we will see.

I vote for the bolt holes too.
Primarily because I feel it was built in to the design as a safety feature, so screwing the new spoiler on to the old as well as using adhesive.

Perhaps it might be possible to ask for "caps" to be made that could be fitted over the screws should it be preferred they are not seen?

I suggested the bolt holes be deleted as I felt it gave the "new" spoiler another point to being different from the "votex" should the issue of copyright ever rear it's head. Cheers Mike

HI Mike,

A very valid point and one worth considering, but there wil be other differences (such as no stamped indentation on the bottom lip and different construction) also I have documented proof that I have actively sought permission from the company that was effectively "Votex" and also VAG, with no response.

So I am confident enough to take the risk, which would only have a comeback to me, not the club, if anything did come of any copyright issues.

After considering this for a few hours I am thinking of leaving them in and people can always fill them before painting if they want to, the opposite wouldn't apply if we left them off.

That way we are not excluding those that prefer the OEM look and so we should be able to please everyone.

I thought you would have had that tailgate swapped over by now, the tdi was the same paint as the petrol wasn't it?

And fitting a votex rear spoiler really is a 10 minute job.

Clean the old spoiler, apply bonding (mastic or similar) press the Votex in place and keep it there, then drill the four holes and (in my case) bond the bolts in place.

Clean off any excessive bonding.

Job done!

ooops yes probably a bit easier than the whole tailgate, :eek: was thinking bonded to windscreen.

Yes, it would at first glance seem easier to swap the tailgate, but you have to disconnect every wire in it (and there are LOTS) there is no plug and socket to enable you to remove the tailgate without stripping off every connection in there.

To be honest I haven't the tools to transfer the kit over, I've read the how to on removing the bumpers and it looks confusing to me. I love the A2s but not really a diy kind of guy. I haven't even changed the steering wheels over yet or the gear gaiter. Been sitting on my drive for about 4 months now untouched.

So how do I remove the rear spoiler? Just unscrew the bolts and hope the adhesive is not sticky anymore?
 
I have never done it personally but I know plenty of people have done it without issue.

The bolts probably aren't actually screwed into anything firmly, the original spolier has a very thin skin and that is certainly not thick enough to tighten a bolt into, so they will spin out (they may have only been glued in place, some are).

Then you need to get the spoiler warm (especially in this weather) to help soften the adhesive (depending what was used).

Then being extremely cautious, you have to "ease it off". When it is fitted it slides forward as being pushed in place so try and get it moving back a little before trying to lift it.

Do you have th "save" the original spoiler under the Votex? AT the very least it will need the holes filled and the adhesive may have caused some damage too.

The "no risk" option is to swap the entire tailgate as you had planned, but f you do that, take pictures of every connection you disconnect and you will need a strong helper to hold the tailgate in place while you bolt it back on.

It might help if anyone can confirm how strong the adhesive is, as I say many people have removed votex kits including the body kit and that is more fragile than the rear spoiler.
