What mpg are you getting regularly?

I only bought my TDI in March, but I seem to be getting about 58mpg average. I don't have DIS (wish I did, but can't justify installation given I paid £700 for the car), so calculate when refilling.

I have just changed the air filter as it was disgusting, so hoping to gain slightly more economy. I do a 18 mile commute each way to work on twisty Devon A roads.

Ours doesn't seam to have that problem, overtakes no problem on the motorway. If you want something slow that really is glacial in it's progress you want to try a Herald 1300,lots and lots of anticipation needed.;)
Must admit I never found either of my petrol 1.4's to be lacking in speed. Would hold there own in 5th gear on motorway at 75mph with 4 people and loaded up to the hilt
However they didn't have the immediate urgent acceleration that a remapped tdi as
I still think however that for short town type journeys that the 1.4petrol is the best A2 to have much nimbler than the tdi. However for A roads and motorways the tdi wins hands down. But they are all great

Getting high 50's around town and on 8 mile commute to work. Mid 60's on motorway runs at 75 ish Best ever was a run to A2steves of 430 miles on mainly A roads and a bit of motorway where it topped 70 mpg. Interestingly noticeably better on the way back than on the way there (filled up before leaving home and before leaving A2steves, half a tank there 220 miles and ⅜ of a tank to get back. I can only think a good run did some good)

My head hurts...

I drove 330 miles from last full tank... than topped up tank with 25.04 litres

Then convert to gallons? Is this about 60mpg?

Argh... uk gallons real gallons argh... :D

I've tracked mine on Spritmonitor ever since I bought it so I have accurate records rather than DIS fiction ;)

MPG history.jpg

So in 46,606 miles I've averaged 60.6mpg. In the last 7 months on the chart it's been up as high as 71.3mpg on a decent run and down to 56.6mpg when traversing London which is a fair reflection on the overall.

I make it bang on 60mpg.

25.04 litres divided by 4.55 (litres in a gallon) = 5.05 gallons used. 330 miles divided by 5.05 gallons equals 60mpg exactly.

Well that's how I do it anyway!

Just use and app on your phone :) i use S converter for various numbers.
I calculate like this:
1. I hear the Low fuel Beep i fill up the tank (from beep to full about 25 Litres, which is quite strange when you consider that its a 34 liter tank)
2. Then i press the trip count button and wait for the next beep.
3. After the beep i get the km i've traveled with those liters and divide KM traveled by Liters filled. I get the number for 1 liter and convert that number to MPG in the app

Well, that kind of reminds me of my first car, Mk1 Golf 1100N with a knackered engine... 0-60 was possible. Brakes were typical Mk1 too, so lots of anticipation for stopping as well :)

Between 200 and 220 miles per 20 quid fill from the beep on the mapped TDI 1.4 75brake. This is constant stop start short journeys around town and local 40 mph country side roads. Stop/starting sometimes 30 times plus. The car now does this full time since the blue one got written off doing the same job. incidentally, the blue 1.4TDI unmapped doing exactly the same job was getting around 180....200 per 20 quid fill.

I have had to drive two different TDIs at 60 on motorways in the last few weeks (due to suspected issues) for around 50 miles each.

BOTH averaged 80 MPG and both were just 5 speed.

The MYP conversion is great, a sixth gear drops the revs needed, but a standard, well maintained TDI should get in the region of 80 MPG on a level motorway at 60MPH (if you get to 60 first and zero the average MPG at that point to remove the reduction of accelerating to that speed)

The sixth gear (via whatever method) makes it easier and less stress on you and the engine, but in my experience it does not significantly affect MPG (it obviously affects it in a positive way, but not a huge amount).

So the 6 speed conversion is never for financial gain, it is because it makes the car nicer to drive on motorways and also for the "nice to have" feel. (It really did make my enjoyment of my "project" significantly higher)

With my TDI 75 I usually get low 70s during summer and mid/high 60s during winter. Best last year was 74.99mpg.

80 MPG when driving at 60 MPH in the 6th gear (MYP) using cruise control.

Did you have any issues with 6th gear and cruise control ? as from what ive read it wont work in 6th gear and from info on the net from 1.9 TDI's doing the 5 to 6 speed conversion it varies from you need ecu reprograming or instrument cluster recoding for the extra gear ...
