what paint for underbody repair

With a previous owner, my A2 gained a dent underneath and there is some metal showing. Luckily this is under the passenger footwell cubbyhole, so I can easily push the panel back to its original shape by pressing down from above.

I plan on tidying up the surface and then painting and undersealing. Problem for me is what paint or treatment to use.

My local Halfords-like shop has some alternative to primer and coloured paint:
- liquid galvanisation. Its says on the can: no need for undercoat, use on steel or aluminium
- underseal: a flexible tar-based product, not sure whether this can do straight onto metal.

Anyone know about the A2's paintwork? Is the body galvanised?
If I use the spray can of "liquid galvanisation" could I get some reaction with the alu?

well for a starter the A2 certainly isn't galvanised, not much point on an aluminium bodied car, also the damaged area won't rust as such, it will form a coating of oxidation which is the ally equivalent of rust but won't go any further, as for a reaction with the paint, not a clue about that but I wouldn't risk it, contact one of the Audi ally bodyshops and ask their advice.

The following is taken directly from the Audi repair manual:

Long-term body protection
– The inside of new parts must be painted with a topcoat before the parts are welded in.
– Bright metal areas must be primed immediately following repairs (corrosion protection primer ALN 002 003 10 or ALK 007 003 10).
– Holes must always be deburred.
– Always apply welding primer (D 007 500 04) to both sides of welding flanges.
– Prime inside and outside of seam areas prior to sealing.
– Sealing compound must only be applied to primed panel sections.
– Make sure you seal overlaps and edges of metal panels, butt joints, welding seams etc. completely using sealing compound.
– Restore paintwork.
– Restore underseal using long-life underseal material.
– All cavities in the repaired area must be sealed after applying topcoat.
– Separating cuts (e.g. in side panel) must be fully sealed.
– After the cavity protection material has dried clear the water drains.

Hope that helps,

Hi Gaff
Personally I would not use primers or paint and would just clean the surface then brush on a few layers of Waxoyl (assuming you can get the equivalent in France) This will protect the alloy from damp and road salt etc but won't crack or peel like traditional underseal often does over time.

This is exactly the info I needed. Will order some Audi paint on Monday.
Thanks for all of the replies.
