What's your target diesel MPG?

I did 116 miles today nearly all at 60mph, except roundabouts, traffic etc...

2 adults + 2, 4 stone kids.

205 40 17's tyres

1.4 tdi 75hp se, a/c off

around 12c.

brim to brim from the same pump! 7.97ltrs

equals

66.17mpg - My best yet in 18 months.

Has anyone done a similar test at say 50mph, 60mph and 70mph?

On another forum I know of a Mercedes CLS320CDi owener that can average almost 55mpg. Quite impressive I thought.

I've never measured our A2 tdi (doesn't have DIS, worse luck) but my 1.9tdi Passat has done 57.6mpg over the last 1100 miles - which includes a fair bit of short around town journeys of less than 3 miles. Best ever was Bristol - Newcastle - Bristol at 76.8mpg (with a/c on all the time), so I'm sure that I could get a load better out of the wee un.

Incidentally, I know that the Passat's DIS is accurate as I've checked it. How close is the Audi DIS to reality?

On the assumption that VW and Audi use exactly the same DIs software i imagine they are equally accurate or innacurate! I know i started this thread on the basis of comparing mpg on the same journey however in parctice it is overall mpg that actually counts when it comes to true fuel running costs. i am quite sure if someone drove slow enough even an Audi A8 TDi could acheive 100mpg but what would it actually prove in real world motoring?

Hi Adrian,

I'm interested in this very fact, as if you take it to an extreme of say 1mph, the mpg would be very bad, a diesel generator gets 0mpg!

Up to a certain speed, mpg must improve as speed increases, and then fall away again as speed increases further.

I would love to find that figure, the best I have done 66mpg at 60mph for 100miles.

Has anyone run at 30, 40, 50mph or even 70mph for a considerable distance.

It would be really interesting, for me anyway to see this on a graph. I know it's a very anal, and not really important in the real world, but I would just like to know what's possible.

Maybe one day I will be 100 miles from the next services when the reserve light comes on! If I have to drive at 15mph to get there, then I would like to know that! I can't walk at 15mph! lol.

I've only done 60 and 70mph tests and that was during mixed weather.
Roughly, the results were:

60mph (5C) - 70mpg
60mph (15C) - 75mpg
70mph (5C) - 60mpg

I've rounded the numbers up/down as I'm not so confident on such mpg measurements.

ps. hope my numbers are consistent with those I posted last time ;)

I am for 60 mpg if Im not thrashing about.

Dodging round town its about 55.

I think warmer weather and the oil change has helped a lot.:)

Brim to Brim on 448 miles over the past 2 weeks has given 58.5mpg against a DIS recording of 56.5...... Mixture of local, city, m/way (at 80 ish). Stiil have aero parts, exhaust to fit. Am having g/box oil changed next week and check to see if any MAF faults. Pretty close to target!

Best I can average on Dorsets finest A & B roads is 52mpg, My Jag S type diesel will only get 36mpg on the same roads, where as the Jag gets better in motorways (46mpg) the A2 does not.

All current Polo gearboxes (including the Bluemotion) are filled with G070 gearbox oil, which is the uprated oil I have put in Tank.

As Spike says, the original spec oil for the A2 was G052, which was then superceded by G060 oil, and in turn, this is now replaced by G070.

There's no super special Bluemotion specific oil Will, this is probably why you're having a job finding it.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike is the G060 still available as i went into Audi this week to order gearbox oil said i wanted the G070 picked it up today (got to go back tomorrow as they only ordered 1L but 2 gaskets:confused:) but the first part of the part number says G060 and finishes in A2. I take it they've supplyed me with the 60 stuff then is there any differences???????????

Cheers Phil

Yes, the G070 and G060 seem to be pretty interchangeable and it seems that Audi tend to use the G060 and VW the G070.

Both are good oils and both will work well with the A2 TDi gearbox.

Cheers,

Mike

When I last checked Alison's consumption back in April 2022, I got a figure of 59.1 mpg.

Mileage at the time was about 264,000 miles.

I don't bother trying to drive economically; I just wait until Alison has warmed up and make smooth and swift progress.
