Which is the best PC maker-Dell, Mesh, Evesham?.

Dell are ok but use bespoke hardware (used to anyway) making motherboard upgrading impossible.

Bet there are some horror stories out there just waiting to be told!.

I think upgrading the Dell motherboards is possible - but you need to ensure that you replace the power supply at the same time - the Dell connectors are wired in an... ahem... unique fashion. Horror stories about Dell's customer service, of late, abound. In the past I've had excellent service from them - flying parts for duff machines out for me - but I'd think twice about getting a current machine from them.

Mesh machines have always been highly regarded - particularly with their outright performance.

I haven't had any dealings with Evesham - their machines seem well designed and the components well matched... just a little pricey, though.

I'm biased because I sell them but NEC are worth a look. Well built, in good solid cases.

3 year onsite warranty is cheap (which is always a good sign), and they do good deals on LCD flat screens ('cos they make them).

Dell Poweredge servers are excellent. Pricing on desktop PCs seems to vary quite a lot, some good deals available.

These days I'd resist upgrading (except cheap things like memory) and optimally replace every 3 to 4 years.

Must....resist....another......upgrade.....Ah dang it, I just can't help myself. I build them from parts and upgrade when I need it for new games and the like (usually every 6 months or so).

Check this out, how I butchered my case when I got bored with it (it's taken in the dark)....

My experience for home PCs is as follows:

Bought 1997 - PC World P1 130 Still running fine - upgrades to memory, hard drive and network card added for internet connection sharing. Went through 4 CD roms in first two years - all under wtty, since then fine.

Bought 2000 _ Evesham Athlon 700. Network card added. No problems apart from firewall/goback incompatibility solved by re-formating drive C.

Bought 2002 - PC World e-machines 360. Based on experience of first machine and £600 for 1700 Celeron system incl printer+scanner was unmatched. Not ideal for games hence ideal for student going to university:D:D:D - No problems.
