Will 195 or 205 tyres fit?

Fitting the new tyre yesterday the tyre man asked why I did not fit 195/50VR16 or 205/50VR16 tyres instead of the standard 185s. He says they are far more common and thus CHEAPER than our funny size!!! Grrr... after my tyres got slashed I got 2 new tyres and then 2 days later 2 more new ones... Would have been perfect time to upgrade to this size... Has anyone else done it?

Should fit - arn't the Sports on 17" 205s???

May need to check the brake cables/pipes don't rub and the speedo will read 1.6%-3.3% LOW depending on which you fit as rolling radius is greater.

Black circles prices for Pilot Premacies are £107 (185), £96 (195) and £102 (205)!

195's will certainly fit on 16"rims.
My mate got a puncture on his SE and had his rear tyre replaced. A few days later he said that he'd noticed the traction light coming on more often than previously. I checked the tyre and the pillocks that fitted the tyre had replaced his 185 with a 195. Needless to say a few choice words were exchanged.

215s fit too, but it's tight.
185/55, 195/50, 195/55, 205/50 are all OK on 15" rims;
185/50, 195/45, 195/50, 205/45 are all OK on 16" rims.
205/40, 215/40 and 215/35 are OK on 17s AFAIK.

I think that you have to ensure that the overall diameter stays correct, or the traction control / ESP will be upset - and may not work properly at all! So, on a 16" rim, it's unlikely that both a 195/45 and 205/45 will be ok, as the overall diameters will be different....

Okay, I'm going to cause some confusion here....

Last time I checked with tyre-manufacturers (websites) to see if 195/50/16 fitted on the standard 6 spoke SE rims, I found out that such a combination was not allowable!

And that's due to the fact that the SE rims are too narrow. Something like 5,5J.

Can't find the exact page right now. But I'm sure it was like that. It made me revise my idea to ask my dealer to exhange my tires for 195/50/16 next time...

Edo that makes sense... that is why the tyres are so scarce to begin with: they are extremely low profile for such narrow tyres on fairly big rims. Some Audi engineer making decisions on tyres obvioulsy bought some tyre company stock when he designed the alloys!

Just checked the Audi web-site - the 15" wheels are either 5.5" or 6" depending on pattern, the 16s are 6" and the 17" are 7"

Well, I felt obliged to find proof for the mild confusion I may have caused, but I failed to find any information on actual manufacturer sites.

But I did find this:

http://customwheelsmarket.com/rimwheelwidth1.html

And it shows I may have been wrong. Allowable rim width for a 195/50/16 is 5.5 to 7.0

So if (and only if!) the SE 6 spoke wheel is really 5.5 or more, then a 195 tire should be fine.

Don't know about 195/45/16 though. It's not in the list above. But it _is_ a better match (diameter-wise) to the standard 185/50/16's. Maybe that is where I got confused: I wanted 195/45's...?

Decide for yourself ;)

AFAIK, the diameter doesn't matter for either ESP or ABS; i use 185/55s in the winter and 215/40R17s in the summer and there's no problem, not that ESP has come into action in the summer...

there are a couple of interesting technical PDFs on Nokian's website (NokiaN, not nokia) which specify the sizes allowed in terms of rim width vs. tyre. BUT: too wide a rim means no comfort (as it'll be strechted) and too wide a tyre means no handling.

215/45R17 is too big to fit: the wheels no longer turn properly at the front and will take pieces off the inside of the rear wheel arch.

in the german standard "allowed" list are 175/60R15; 185/50R16 and 195/45R16; 205/40R17. all approx 1820mm circumference. My 215s are a little too big (1.8% or so, which is within the limits), but any bigger requires a speedo recalibration.

Edo: there are a couple of tyre calculators on the web, and they should help to define the sizes you can use.

The key for WSP/ASP etc is to keep them all the same, the system measures rotational speed so if all are the same diameter then they all rotate at the same speed. The system should cope with some variation or you could not mix new/old tyres (unlike 4x4s which cannot cope with any difference in diameter).

I bought at Audi Service Center advice some OZ SuperLeggera on 16 with ContiSportContact 205 45 R16 and now the GALA doesn't work very well... I know the shortcut from the center console to change the values, but I don't figure the right value...
