Windows that open by themselves!!

Not sure If I am going mad or not! But yesterday I returned to my A2 to find both front windows open by about 2 inches. I am a bit OCD about shutting and locking my car so I am sure they were closed when I left it. There were no signs of tampering, or damage, and nothing was stolen. Did they open on their own?? I have an ongoing problem with the doors locking and unlocking every time I put the keys in, so is the central convenience unit playing up? Any suggestion gladly taken, my last resort is to ask the dealer when it gets serviced in Feb next year.

Cheers and Seasons Greetings,

Dave

if you press and hold the unlock button on the remote key the windows open or close
is it your button sticking
just an idea

It has happened to me in the past where I have sat on the keys while in a friend's house in a not too salubrious area of Dublin.

I came out later to find the hazard warning lights on and the windows down. I thought it had been broken into!

I didn't know this was a "feature" !!!!! ;) I will have a go and try to replicate the problem and report back.

Thanks for the tip. Cheers, Dave

This is a well-known problem with Audis that goes back to the first A4 in the early Nineties. The fix then was, I think, to add an extra earth wire somewhere, and later to recode via VAGcom. It's happened once on my A2, so I haven't bothered to get it recoded, but our 2005 A6 did it after I asked the supplying dealer to code in the key-operated window opening and closing, so I took it back and they keyed in another code to cure it. I do suspect, though, that as it only happened when SWMBO was using the car, she might have caught the unlock button as she put they keys into her handbag.

Sorry I can't be more specific - I'm sure Skipton will be along soon!

It also works in reverse. If you hold down the lock button, the windows close themselves.

This was handy for affixing the ribbon when I got married. We closed the door, pulled the ribbon in and closed the window. It was so tight we had to open the windows to get out of the car. When we closed the doors again, the ribbon had lost its tension so we were able to push it back in and then close the windows from the outside.

I have a good photo of the A2 wedding car but am not too sure how to upload it.

All the posts up until now are quite correct - there is a 'comfort' feature which enables all electric windows to be opened or closed via the fob, or even via the key being held in the lock (this will also actuate the roof too).

However, the random opening could either be this or a malfunctioning comfort unit - this was fairly common on older A4s, especially if they had water ingress.

The fob business has happened to me, it must have been pressed down in the house, as one morning, all the windows were fully down. Good job I live in a pretty good area!

Keep an eye on things and rule the pressed fob out first, then take it from there.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for the very complete responses.

I must have pushed the button in my pocket (not sure how?:confused:). I recreated it last night, so at least my mind is at rest that no little "scamp" was trying to get into my precious A2.

Great site, unfortunately the only thing I can help other members with is detailing. So if any one has any issues with cleaning, polishing and protecting your car, I will try and help. On all thing mechanical I know my limits, and you guys (esp Mike and Spike) seem to know everything! So my New Year's resolution is to try and post more when I can be useful!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Not long ago, I thought my A2 was playing tricks with me. I parked the car in the morning as usual at work. When returning to the car at night I noticed the passenger window was open. I couldn't understand why so I prepared myself for an expensive trip to the dealer to have a diagnostic scan done. The window operated normally so I closed it. After a while I remembered that on my way to work I had opened the window to vent out a really terrible fart, and apparantly forgot to close the window afterwards.:)

Lovely - thanks for that!
