winter heating and starting (TDI)

I have no idea what the modification costs...My precious is a lease car so the leasing company arranged it. Installing the complete system in car will cost about 1000 Euro's but the A2 already has most of the system already builtin, so pricing must be less. Contact a webasto dealer and ask them how much it will cost, they have the Audi manual that is needed to connect the timer to the car's wiring.

The heater has to run for 10 minutes to warm the interior and de-ice all the windows. After half an hour the engine is at 90 degrees celsius. Sometimes this varies, this has to do with the fact that the heated water is also flowing through the radiator and if the wind is blowing on the radiator the water is cooled.
But half an hour is a reasonable time, if the engine is not fully heated, it's almost there.
The heater consumes one lite of fuel per hour so this would cost half a liter.

I note Torquil’s fair comment questioning how much the A2’s economy is eroded if a full blown “Webasto” system is fitted, but my own belief is that whilst admittedly such devices will consume more fuel the concept will protect/extend the life of the engine. Moreover as and when an engine starts to become slowly knackered due to wear it becomes less fuel efficient, so it could be argued that in the long run the webasto unit saves money.

To pick up on JDi's comment about electric pre heaters in the US my father fitted (DIY) a Kenlowe Hotstart to his Volvo 740 Diesel and ran it for around 6 years so they are avaiable over here. I do not know if he has transferred it to his current S80 D5. The Kenlowe has an internal pump so as it warms the water it circulates it round the engine so will also warm the block and oil.

Presumably this is exactly what the Webasto does but it is probably cheaper, can be DIY fitted (if there is space), and hits the domestic electicity bill rather than the MPG. Could also be fitted to a petrol car.

Why are all the A2s in Lichfield are silver ? ? ?

True, but the A2 needs the webasto in the winter. When the engine is idling (traffic jam) it simply doesn't develop enough heat. When I use the econ button to switch the heater off and the outside temp is about -5 celsius the engine temperature drops to 60 celsius in 15/20 minutes.
If that continues the engine becomes to cold to warm the interior.

For a petrol egine the electrical domestic connected preheater is probably the best and cheapest solution.

My A4 does not run below 90oc when it has actualy got there but we don't have traffic jams and the temp is not usualy below -5oc in the daytime.
Maritime weather! rather than continental.
