Just wondering if anyone has installed zenon headlamps (as I see here in Switzerland on most all S3, S4, S6, S8, RS4 & RS6 Audi's)on an A2?

My wife loves the "look" and this could be a "dual purpose" gift. Any information, part numbers and costs involved are appreciated.

I've never heard of a xenon conversion being done on an A2, but you may find something useful on the following links (10% off through the A2OC):

Are you coming to the club social?

Thanks for the link, which I have checked out. The bulbs seem like what I am looking for, but I am unsure if they have the same color as the xenon bulbs. Does anyone have any experience with these types of bulbs? Do they give the same color light at the xenon bulbs?

I have the phillips 50% brighter bulbs they give a whiter light that normal and are far more effective.

Check this out from Martyn @ VAG Parts:

quote:Oh... whilst I think of it.... I've now got the A2 HID xenon retro fit kits
in stock!!!! just another one of my new products to launch the shop with
:)) I tested the H7 kit on my S2 this weekend to see if any bulb check
faults came up on the dash, none!! so I will be launching those kits in the
new shop!! I could really do with a kit being test fitted for me (at a lower
price!!) so I can have a write up and photo's on the kit. If you know anyone
who might be willing to do this? I'd love to be able to offer a write up
procedure for the A2!

The kits will be sold online at £385 inc vat delivered. I'd be prepared to
pay 50% of the kit cost for someone to do a real good how to write-up with
photo's!! If anyone in the club would be willing, could you let me know
please?

It is, I might be tempted, but even £190ish is a lot when I could just plug some Philips V+ bulbs in... Still a VERY good offer for someone though

I am tempted, but I´m not sure it is allowed over here in Germany.... normally if you have Xenon lamps you need to have automatic lamp adjustment and lamp cleaners, too...:-(

Bye, Frido.

I may be interested in taking Martyn up on his offer. First, I would like to clear up some issues such as: 1. The extent of the modifications (changing ballast, wiring, etc.) How difficult will this be? Can I go back to standard bulbs if necessary? I have heard that in some cases the headlight reflectors need to be cut. Is this the case? 2. The output of the bulbs. i.e.would I get 7000K as in "real xenons"? The Phillips provide 4800K as I have read. 3. Would this modification be legal to do? Living in Switzerland I don't really worry, as most likely it would not be a problem here. My concerns are the EU, where I often journey. Comments?

Ade, I will email Martyn. We have been in contact before, during the "towing debate".

The regulations are international (probably EU).

See http://www.autolamps-online.com/gasdischarge/faq6to10centre.htm They will have this posted as protection - if you buy their kit and are prosecuted you cannot say they misled you.

To be legal the kit should include automatic height adjustment and washers.

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield are silver ? ? ?

Response from Martyn

quote:I've been speaking with one of the club members about this today. All of those regulations apply to the car, not the HID kits, To remain completely legal, any car equipped with xenon's should have all those features listed. No way round that fact.

After talking at length with many people about the lights and these issues, the manual headlight aim can be used to lower the aim of the headlamps if you feel they are too high. The common sense approach to prevent any dazzle to oncoming drivers is just to be aware if the lights are becoming dirty and wipe them off.

The bottom line. The lights would be technically illegal without those features. The 'market demand' caused the creation of HID kits as people want xenon, but won't pay over £1,500+ to have all of the above features installed in their car.

In reality, no one that we know of, has ever come across an instance of retro fit xenon's getting owners into trouble. Indeed, we've heard many retro fit xenon lights passing straight through an MOT without issue. It's a simple task to revert back to halogen if needed.

People want xenon's and are not prepared to pay the high price of a technically perfect installation, therefore these kits exist to fill that need. It is the owners choice as to whether to use them or not. A responsible owner would benefit immensely from xenon lights and not allow them to create any form of nuisance to other road users. The difference between halogen and xenon is of huge benefit to night driving, the use of xenon headlights on motorcycles would greatly reduce the number of accidents involving poorly lit bikes and be of significant safety improvement to all road users. I have been using xenon for three months now and not had any trouble at all.

Our custom made xenon kits have *just* passed the stringent German E1 mark only last week!

Hello Ade i am picking up my new A2 TDI Sport in the week if Martyn is still looking for a test Car i would very much like to be this car as this is a change i will performing so a discount for my opions would be great.

After coming from a car with xenons i have vowed never to back pretty much in the same way i`m sure everyone feels about A/C & Climate now. They are simply brillant for driving at night with plus on a purley cosmetic level they look quite cool.

Don`t want to jump on any ones toes here but if the offer for a test car is still open could you pass my details on to him

Cheers Jon

Interesting.
I use xenon discharge lighting on my mountain bike (okay sad I know) but in the dark of the moors in winter at night etc. you cannot beat 84 watts of HID for seeing what you are doing as you career down singletrack at 30 to 40 mph!
geat fun.
Philips extras are good enough on the road though.
