Today I.....

Removed the scuttle to repair a tiny crack (super glue and bicarb), fitted heated washer jets and refurbed wiper arm. Not done this before but pleasantly drama free. Gave it a good clean in there; 22 years of dust and dirt. Next job to wire the washers and the lumber adjustment on the seats. Just got to figure out how to feed some power through the bulkhead!

Evening,

I’ve just looked on the Project EUD thread to point you at the information I (thought) added for the community to learn from. Appears that I’ve not actually done that write up and have since deleted the pictures. If you can wait until next weekend then I’ll get the glove box off to show you where I took each heated washer jet loom through. It’s a simple 2 wire operation for each jet:

  • Ignition live - passengers A pillar
  • Ground/earth - passengers A pillar
This image should help for now though:

Kind regards,

Tom

Today I changed the oil pressure switch on my FSi possibly the easiest job ever on an FSi but still satisfying .........definitely expired oil coming through the switch
Outside EuroParts at 10 , back home by 10.30 all done and dusted by 11

Today I experienced, for the first time, the thrill one of coils failing whilst driving. Engine started shuddering and a very pessimistic aroma of burnt plastic quickly filled the cabin. At first I feared the cambelt 😳 but once the bonnet came off I could see one of the coils top slightly melted. RAC to the rescue and after fiddling work to unglued/ unplug the melted coil a spare one allowed me to park my A2 to my local garage, lucky 0.9 miles away from the breaking down spot.
I decided to replace all the original 73K miles coils, just in case…

Changed the coolant, thermostat and coolant pressure sensor on the grey car. Not a job I’ve done before but it was annoying me that it wasn’t getting up to 90 even on a run so decided to have a bash. As ever, access (especially on the lower of the two thermostat housing bolts) was the biggest challenge but I was delighted to this

After a quick potter up the duel carriageway. 😀

Nice work Erling,

Having the needle sitting at 90° is a reassuring view isn’t it. To make things easier in the future, cut a 10mm socket down with an angle grinder (whilst the socket is in a clamp) to reduce its length. Works a treat on the lower thermostat bolt.

Here’s what I now use for this task on the TDI:

Yep, that would have made live markedly easier for sure. Top tip, many thanks @2work Tom as ever 👍

Haha;

You should have remembered the Project OEM post from a few months ago Erling:

You’ll be fully prepared next time Sir.

Today I was having a tinker in my little workshop, seeing as the weather is crap again. I thought I would have a look at my spare engine and some other bits I have.

I really don't fancy trying to move this AMF engine as a complete unit again, so I got started taking a few bits off it.

I think this engine has done around 185,000 miles, but it doesn't seem in bad condition, and was supposed to be a strong engine last time it was running.

I'm trying to free off the bleed nipples on these calipers, because if they won't come loose then they are scrap

Had a bit of a clean up of the EGR valve as well, it's a Wahler.

I don't really have any plans for any of this stuff, so if you see something you need/fancy, just let me know.

For the third year in a row I am sharing my workshop with a Blackbird, we seem to tolerate each other well enough, even though the young ones make a right mess when they are fledging. I guess it's a small price to pay for the privelige of her company. :)

Today I dropped off the silver 55 plate TDI at WOM to try and find out what the knocking noise is.
After an hours drive back home, I got a call from Rob to tell me the car is ready for pickup.
So, after two years with the knocking sound, two MOTs, loads of so called experts looking at it and not driving it much, it turns out that the noise was coming from??????????

Ill leave it here and let you guess.

Well I had a knock that evaded both me and my independent Audi garage. Took it to WOM and Rob immediately said it's the top rear mounts. I had just changed the shocks and springs but not the top mounts as I thought they were solid. But Rob showed me they are actually 2 metal halves with a rubber between. Mine had been knocking since the last full overhaul of the suspension. Must of been cheep duds.
