mine also did 278200 miles on the original clutch, and it did most of it's miles on A roads, not motorways
When I replaced the clutch it was an LUK original and the spinner plate had 0.6mm left. this does not sound lot, but the replacement LUK clutch only has 1.6mm, so about 1mm of clutch material used in 272K miles, I estimate that the clutch would have done at least another 100K miles had it not been for the release bearing giving up, also caused by the actuating arm wearing through the bolt pivot bolt and therefore pushing the release bearing sideways.
The clutch is certainly not a weak point on the TDI
