Chat Most miles ever ?

mine also did 278200 miles on the original clutch, and it did most of it's miles on A roads, not motorways

When I replaced the clutch it was an LUK original and the spinner plate had 0.6mm left. this does not sound lot, but the replacement LUK clutch only has 1.6mm, so about 1mm of clutch material used in 272K miles, I estimate that the clutch would have done at least another 100K miles had it not been for the release bearing giving up, also caused by the actuating arm wearing through the bolt pivot bolt and therefore pushing the release bearing sideways.

The clutch is certainly not a weak point on the TDI

My clutch was replaced before i bought it. 1st to 2nd is a bit glitchy and is very sensitive when releasing throttle. Car has 215k+ miles on it.
How is your MPG? I was afraid to buy such high miled A2, but you guys are running 200k+ miles with the same engine calms me down a bit

The 282,000 mile A2 I recently bought returned an average of 72 MPG on the 50 mile trip home.

My 284600 miles A2 TDI is regularly returning 55mpg on very short winter journey, 60mpg on same journey in the summer. 70MPG on longer motorway journey is also regularly achieved
So I certainly would not worry about a higher mileage A2 TDI, in fact I would prefer a higher miles car than a very low miles car

I'm quite confused how you get 60mpg on short journeys in winter.
My 1.4 TDI 75bhp gets only 38-ish on short trips in winter.
And i rarely go over 2500rpm

what is the average ambient temperature ? it is rarely less than 0Deg C in the UK for any length time
MPG on diesels decrease rapidly as the ambient temp reduces below 0deg C

There is definitely something wrong with your car then, on the motorway you can hardly ever hear the engine and that is on a 75 or 90.

The missing undertray will affect the noise a little but my wife's car has had hers missing for years and the noise is not an issue (at tickover outside of the car it is noisy but not on the motorway.

Believe me I have driven many thousand of miles on motorways in various A2s.

No it sounds just like any other a2 tdi . May be just me as they seem to be revving high at say 80 compared to what I'm used to as I used to have more modern big diesel cars that are more powerful

I'd say something 's not right if your only getting 38 mpg. I can't get my mpg that low if I tried lol. Mine still does around 50mpg when I'm out delivering so lots of start stop town driving and turning it off and on during the night and that's with a heavy right foot . Mines a 1.4 tdi 75 with 179k

I don't want to turn this thread into diagnosing my mpg :D
But it was in winter. Winter in Lithuania was average -7c (-1 to -10 mostly)
I've replaced:
Oil
Gearbox Oil
Oil filter
Air filter
G62 sensor (green one)
Webasto is working (although didn't notice any change in fuel consumption with the webasto and without webasto)

Coolant temp through OBD shows 82c~ when the needle shows 90c (dashboard)

I just don't have any more ideas about this :) The only thing i didn't change is Fuel Filter which 2 different friends (working with cars) say it doesnt anyhow influence MPG.

One last thing i can blame this on are my 185/65r15 tires and my short trips. I only have to drive about 5 km to my work, or friends, or city or girlfriend

I'd change the fuel filter anyway tbh . I run 205/45/16 tyres on mine and when I'm out delivering I do lots of trips very short some under a mile then stop the engine collect more and same again . The lowest I've every had from mine on a really busy night when I was really putting my foot down was 44mpg

I think you'd be pleasantly surprised how comfy these cars are on a long journey, I've travelled to several social meets and many hundreds of miles in one hit with no backache or fatigue, sports seats and lumbar support help admittedly.
Cheers Jeff

Yeah Craig,
My thoughts are you are running your car all night/day depending on your shift, that means your engine doesn't get cold, which means you are running on working temperatures even on your short trips which makes your short trips into long trips :)
My journey takes 10 minutes to work. Than engine gets cold, then i drive another 10 minutes to home or to friends and so on.. :)
What else could i do?

I would agree that your very short trips then engine to cold then another very short trip WILL result in very bad fuel consumption. My person commute to work is 8 miles, so even in the very cold winters I am hitting a reasonable engine temperature after about 1/2 of my journey.
With your type of journey I would say that 35mpg is not that bad, have you actually assessed the MPG on a reasonable journey ? lets be honest here a diesel is NOT the vehicle for very short journeys in cold weather, have you ever thought of a petrol A2, the 1.4 petrol warms up MUCH quicker than the diesel engine A2 (I have had both)
The petrol MPG on short journeys like your is likely to be better than the diesel

Had a 250km~ journey which resulted in about 11-12L based on the needle (wasn't counting that much, don't have a DIS). 60ish mpg.
I think that getting a petrol A2 isn't worth the hassle for me. As my friends tell me to just drive and don't give a crap that much about numbers. But i'm a bit obsessive about this since i recently bought the car and i read a lot about other members heavenly MPG numbers :D

I think that 60mpg ish is heavenly
you have to be realistic about MPG and very short journeys in the cold weather
