Webasto! Why won’t it work on its own…. VCDS enabled??

Mr Blacks is 1514 and running sweet (last time it was cold enough) on 00005

This is absolutely feeling like there is something else in play that we don’t yet understand
I have work with software for 30 years and there is no such thing as random just circumstances that you don’t understand making it seem random

Yeah I am totally lost too, struggling to know what makes me special but I promise its what I am seeing!

Tom @Howey and Paul @depronman,.

Just to confirm that both the fleet here are climate control/air conditioned, I understand your vehicles are manual heating which is should be noted to not confuse things further.

Kind regards,

Tom

That's the only possible reasoning but the pattern makes no sense!

Agree Tom,

So far from a quick scan of the thread, we’ve only got results from 5 vehicles:

3x non climate control (you x2 and Paul @depronman)
2x climate control (both my fleet)

We really need further input from the wider community to identify any trend. This thread has been extremely useful so far by revealing that the 00005 (1514 firmware) map does indeed hinder the Webasto kicking in automatically with a climate control vehicle, but could do with additional members joining in the conversation/information flow to hopefully obtained a more informed answer.

Kind regards,

Tom

Econ not pressed so webasto engaged

Just for clarity the other 1’s in the middle of block 16 would also prevent webasto running

One is engine stopped the other is delay after engine start

Ahh so if I started the engine they should go then, no faults are present in the ecu for it too!

Ahh I see my bad I thought mine was an anomaly so yeah must be the a/c stopping it. Wonder if unplugging the a/c pressure switch would allow it to run on 00005. The a/c pressure switch can be a devious little bleeder when it fails so only a complete guess if it's working fine thou!!

Yes the two in the middle should clear on engine start - one immediately the engine starts and the other after about 30 seconds of engine running
You also have the 1 at the left hand end and the 1 at the right hand end. These also need to be 0’s for webasto operation. One of them is ambient temp and the other from member is engine coolant above 80deg C

Good Evening Mac,

That is correct then. By pressing The ECON button (lights up) the air conditioning is turned off to save fuel and therefore it will be more ECONomical.

In addition if a Supplementary Heater is present this will be prevented from functioning to save even more fuel, as page 104 of the handbook.

Ahh ... I was thinking the other way around, that ECON had to be On, (to reduce engine load), and allow Aux Heater to run. Cheers.
Mac.

Depends what you mean by on. If you call on when the light is on then the aux heater is disabled and the aircon inoperative
The default position being off and this is the state after every ignition on off cycle

Hi, I'm so excited as my webasto fired up after changing the fuel pump under the car.
My car is non ac 2003 amf with a map by a friend. Engine on 00005 thingy.
Econ button works fine. Heres my vcds of today's joyful test.

The power of the webasto is just beautiful. I'm so happy.

I sat in and ot cooked as it did the full cycle up to 80 deg, it even kicked back in again as the coolant cooled down. Perfect 🥰

Here's my suggested explanation.
The early firmware did not include the ECON button status as an Aux Heater Shut Off condition.
Because the Webasto does not impose much load on the engine, there's no reason to, (I appreciate it uses fuel).
That would explain why it is missing from the early VCDS Lite .lbl, (lable), file, but included in the latest .cbl version.
The later firmware, has the ECON button status as an Aux Heater Shut Off, because the electric heater drawing 900 Watts, certainly does increase engine load, albeit via the alternator, which has to provide the significant value extra power.
Mac.

Afternoon Edd,

Great news regards your Webasto being alive Sir, they are a great thing when working aren’t they. You must be chuffed with all the work you’ve put in to get it running.

Looks to me that a non-climate control A2 operating on 1514 can happily use both the 00002 and 00005 maps without worrying about the Webasto not jumping into life when the conditions are met.

Great information indeed.

We could do with similar contributions from members with climate control A2s as it’s only my 2 so far, would like to have my assumption backed up by someone else’s findings so I can take the correct action with Paul to have more power all year round with the Webasto cutting in when it’s supposed to.

Kind regards,

Tom
