6-Speed Gearbox

The trouble is, there's no real clear commitment from Audi that they'll actually make a proper Mk2 A2, other than the regular ongoing speculation that it'll be nothing more than a Badge-engineering exercise repurposing one of the other VW platforms just simply to plug a numbers' gap in Audi's ever-expanding, bloated range line up. If they do vomit one up, I can't see it being the embodiment of Vorsprung Durch Teknik that the Ur-A2 was.
Sorry, feeling mighty cynical this morning :(

Whilst I'm never one to see a glass as half empty, I'm inclined to agree with you, Dan. That said, Audi's dithering where a Mk2 A2 is concerned may be because they know it has a lot to live up to.
Keeping this thread on topic, a 6th gear would seem to do a lot to keep the A2 'current'. Whilst its engine tech might be 15 years old, the rest of its engineering remains ahead of the pack. With a 6th gear and the ability to do over 80mpg, an A2 TDI is still miles better than a hybrid or a Polo BlueMotion.

True!
We just need someone to attempt to transplant a current-gen VAG 1.2TDi motor into the A2 now to see what is possible with modern diesel tech.

Current cars with the modern 1.2TDI engines are crippled by the DPF. So it might be interesting to see how it performs in a car without it. I suspect things like the ECU could be a big problem in doing a conversion.

It's usually at this point that someone steps in and says it's been done already on the German A2 forum ;)
