Aftermarket

Probably won't sit correctly because the lugs on the centre console are in different places for single and dual din.

It was more of a general issue. I've been through similar recently - I've upgraded the basic radio/cassette (Chorus?) to an Alpine head unit, one of the advantages is that I can now plug in, relatively effortlessly, a 300W (peak) amp to drive some decent rear speakers and a 500W amp to drive a 12" sub-bass box. If I had a standard head unit, I'd be forced to tap into the speaker wires and use direct speaker in, which would limit the audio to 4 channels max, unless you get into splitting it off somehow. Even the most basic Alpine stereo has 2 pairs of phono out, and a decent amplifier of its own, so that's 8 speakers; some have 3 phono outs meaning 10 channels for speakers.
You've got all four line outputs - FR, FL, RR, RL - on the standard OEM units, so I don't see the point. Any amp in a standard head unit is likely limited to 14.4W RMS output power (hello, Ohm's law) because it will still be using 14.4V DC for the amps.

Since the adapters have to be bought, I also don't see the cost benefit here of moving to an alpine unit over upgrading the Symphony to accept USB.

OK no worries - and glad you've confirmed what I suspected, that the line outputs are on the OEM stereos. My situation is based on upgrading from a 2 speaker radio/cassette to a reasonable Alpine head unit (with CD, MP3, WMA capability, better tone controls, subwoofer control, etc and witho ut any steering wheel controls or dash display to worry about it (and the fact that I already had the stereo from previous cars - they were sold with something more basic than my nice Alpine) it was a no-brainer to spend ~£2.99 and fit the Alpine, than seek out a possible £70+ stereo (for CD player), £50+ interface kit (for USB/MP3) and £50+ for stock rear speakers. I was able to put my money towards decent rear speakers and re-use standardised stuff such as my existing amps. I knew the stereo would need some kind of upgrade but I didn't want to limit my choice of car (the other 2 I looked at were far worse condition overall) but wasn't expecting such expensive components to follow the OEM route.

But the question is can a single din fit a double din with ease lol to be honest don't think many would have done this.

so the climate control - assuming it's that - has its own set of lugs. It's also rounded at the bottom.
The cubby is only for single din.

Swapping single to double and back is a major pain if you want to do it correctly - which I'd personally recommend, unless you want flying gear at some point - and the mounting points are not the same for each one within the centre console. You can probably bodge it reasonably easily, but the double-din dash is worth quite a lot to the right people, as is the double-din climate control.

Ahh i see thanks for that info but it has to be done just looking for the best way to do it which way would you guys do it yes its the climate control which are the best parts to buy a6 a4 facia or just a2 cubby hole.

Remember that a single dash climate control can be easily modified to fit a double DIN dash (just a little bit of sanding), so there is no need to hunt for a double DIN climate panel.

Ahh steve but mine is a double din climate i need to go single din

Many people have fitted the double DIN climate into the single DIN dash and apparently the gaps caused by the rounded bottom corners don't seem to show much!!!

I didn't believe that the Double DIN climate would fit at all until I was corrected.

Ok i see your point as my climate sits at the bottom of the dash do i have to keep it there and buy a cubby for under the single stereo or move it to below the stereo and put the cubby under the stereo.

My honest answer is that I don't know.

I know lots of people that would love to change from a single DIN to a double DIN (and several that have) but I have yet to hear of anyone wanting to go from a double DIN to a Single DIN.

I can see why, because you want to fit an aftermarket unit, but I am not sure that you will find many that have. This is why the response to your questions has been lower than you would expect.

I don't believe that you can just put the climate control up one "slot", because the mountings are there on the bottom position, but not there on the one above. But as I say, I really don't know.

Are there no double din headunits that you like? Some of the Apple Carplay ones from Alpine and Pioneer look really good.
