alloys wheels

Before removing a wheel, I always loosen the five wheel bolts one full turn. Then drive the car a distance of about 2 metres (6 feet), ie. one full wheel revolution. Then when you jack the vehicle up to remove the wheel it should come off easily. This method also has the benefit of cleaning up the hub centre bore, so that the wheel will also go back on easily.

Simply kicking the wheel like a horse or using the sledge hammer technique won't clean up the hub centre bore...and doing this while lying under the car probably means you have some kind of death wish.

Safety always comes first.

Tried kicking every which way.... my neighbours must think im crazier than I am ... No matter which way Ive kicked, still not budging. Think Im going to have to reluctatly resort to use a hammer .

Had tried driving as you say with bolts slightly loosed , but as the handbrake is jammed on , the wheel doesnt rotate. it drags.

Agreed safety always first, no car, no DIY is worth taking risks. if the hammer doesnt work, im going to soak it in pen fluid and try again tomorrow. and if that doesnt work maybe home recovery breakdown may help?

once you have it off.
ensure you clean the faces of the hub and wheel
consider putting some copper ease on saide faces so you don't get the same issue in the future.
cooper slip can make the problem worse, there is a special grease for alloy wheels to stop them corroding to the hub. more used on commercial vehicle's

Given up on it for today as the light is starting to fade. Hammer didnt work - only used on the tyre as im afraid of damaging the alloy. Maybe im going to have to hit the alloy?

No. Don't hit the alloy wheel it will crack!

Does anyone A2oc live near to you who can come and take a look and offer support?

Watford area.

Evening Neil,

Sorry to read that you’re struggling to remove one of the wheels. If you feel that you have to hit the alloy itself then ensure you have lump of wood between the weapon of choice and the alloy so it doesn’t damage the paintwork or worse fracture the integrity/construction of the wheel.

Kind regards,

Tom

The way you say the wheel drags due to the handbrake being on makes me think there are bigger issues with this wheel.

If the PENETRATING oil ( not WD40 ) does not help when applied to the centre bore then careful heat onto the area can work but not enough to damage the allow so no oxy bottles please. While hot and the car jacked up and supported, remove all the wheel bolts and shock the wheel onto the axle in opposite diagonals

if they all dont come off in the morning, I am going to hand it over to my local garage. I dont think theres anything wrong with the alloy wheel per se, just that the mating surface and the hub/ drum have corroded or bonded , sorry if my describing of the issue isnt clear . I havent taken the wheels off in a year. The wheel dragging im describing is the handbrake remaining on locking the wheel even with the handbrake lever within the car is released, seperate to removing the wheel. The wheel on the other side freely spins when the handbrake is released

Agreed but it may not be the handbrake itself. The slave cylinder may have leaked or moisture built up in the drum causing the shoes to bond to the drum.

Never yet failed to remove a wheel from the hub. Had to drill out some wheel bolts though.

Dead blow rubber hammer is the weapon of choice or substantial piece of wood placed over rim and normal hammer

Once the wheel was off , gave the drum a few hits with a rubber mallet and the drum freed itself, a lot of dust, dirt but the wheel is now rotating without any restriction , handbrake working good

probably just needs the drum off with a rub of emery paper over the linings and drum contact surfaces
