An OpenSky is reborn!

Yes, I can easily pivot mine up and down, too. They never fail to engage properly, though. Is it not supposed to do that by design? Tom
Hmm, that would be the question then... I do expect the hooks to be tightened because it should hold your first moving glas panel in it's position when it is closed. We should actually send an email to Rinner to ask them...

I think installation of the hooks requires them to be 'snugly' fitted then the roof closed so they self align. Final stage is to fully tighten them - which Rinner appear to have missed. Its worth checking with Rinner so at least they know some roofs have been sent out with slack bolts.

Cheers Spike

Thanks for the advice, Spike. So, it's a case of closing the roof so the hooks are nicely aligned. Then open the roof and, without moving the hooks at all, tighten them up a bit. Does that make sense?

weather forecast?

Anyone know the weather forecast tomorrow for the south coast? I will to be driving back from Worthing with the roof open!! Even if it's raining!!! It's all done and they have even agreed to some money off the service price as there was a problem with some trim (now sorted) in fitting the new OSS....not very often you get good news these days...but this is definitely good news. :D:D:D

That's great news:D:D they sound like a very good dealer. Exerlent customer service giving a discount due to trouble with the trim.

Cheers

David

haudi partner,

Great news and very well done in following this through for others.

I hope you now have many years with the roof open. It’s a shame the OSS has to be totally broken to warrant the replacement, as there are a few of us with shuddering ones that will obviously fail, but possibly fail out of the 10 year time-span.

Hi Tom

This is the full procedure -

Fit locking hook in frame and secure it lightly with the bolts.
– Close sunroof.
– After closing roof, press and hold button for operating sunroof again for approx. 10 seconds.
– This initialises the motor and pushes the locking hook into the correct position.
– Open sunroof and tighten bolts to 4.5 Nm

Cheers Spike

Thanks Jeff,
I feel it is most definitely worth contacting a few dealers to see if they will do a free service on your OSS, or even a repair if it is juddering as most of them do.
Audi have been helpful with this issue but only after many owners made them aware of it, especially members from the A2OC.
They will surely realise that a free service now may keep more of these working as well as saving them money on replacements down the line. I know there is a kit to replace some parts of the OSS without removing it with the jig..so perhaps you can get that done.
Just talk to the dealers guys...some of them want to help and may well be able to get this done as part of the goodwill agreement with the main company...they know how to approach them. I will certainly ask Chris Smith at Worthing about this and he is a good guy to contact in my opinion. Look out for me tomorrow on the A27 , forecast is quite good !!

I wonder if a shuddering juddering OSS is sufficient evidence of underlying failure? Worth a try I guess?

Well Dan,

As haudi partner has said in the past it's unlikely we’ll get a replacement OSS as ours is still working to a degree, but it also does appear Chris Smith at Audi Worthing now knows what is involved in the warranty work (and as far as haudi partner is concerned he’s a good chap), so who knows…..he may be able and willing to help.

I have a good relationship with the parts guys in Audi Northampton (who are also great guys), but I doubt they’d be the right people to pursue this line of enquiry.
I have a busy next 5 days but after that I will speak with both Northampton and Worthing to see if my OSS issues could be resolved under good will. I will of course advise that there is another owner with similar issues and keep the thread updated with any information that’s useful.

Cheers

Worthing recommended

Well I want to give a strong recommendation to Worthing (Caffyns) Audi and Chris Smith. They work a lot with A2's (there were 3 others in there being worked on).
They charged me £314 inc vat for a full service (longlife), brake-fluid change (not included in a full service believe it or not!), MOT test, 1 new CV boot and both boots resecured.
Oh yes....and a new roof!
If you are in the south go and see them, some dealers are all flash plasma screens and coffee machines...not at Worthing, just good, friendly and helpful service.

Haudi partner,

How did Worthing approach the fitting of a replacement roof. Obviously they checked it out but do you know at which point they decided to replace it instead of repairing?

I just assume its a better option to replace it completely over any possible lengthy repair.

Its great that you pursued this at Worthing as its now encouraged a lot of us to do the same in other areas including me here in Kent. I'm having mine checked in a week although Worthing isn't too far for me too if all else fails. Rinners is a last resort.

Many thanks :)

Audi Eastbourne had previously tried to close the roof when it failed, they couldn't close it so they couldn't charge me...so I think it must have been on their system.
Also I discussed it with Chris by email, explaining that the new version of the roof was a lot better in that many of the plastic parts are now metal (which I heard on the forum, thanks). He ordered all the parts in advance including the roof.
It is also quicker and cheaper in terms of labour to replace the roof rather than repair it unless it's a very minor fault. Mine was jammed good and proper and had been shut for a year and a half...so pretty obviously it needed replacing. Also he is a helpful chap, some of the dealers just aren't I'm afraid.

Thanks for that as mine sounds similar in a lot of ways. It wont open all but a very little and making terrible noise as well. I had to close it manually and with a helping hand on top so hoping when I visit Audi Canterbury to have it assessed they will agree to that it needs replacing.
I thought the case would be to change it rather than attempt a repair. Off the top of my head I'm sure in my full Audi history there is a mention of the OSS not working 3 or 4 years ago. Shame they didn't feel the need to replace it then. Here's hoping next week will be successful.

Thanks for the great info.

:)

good luck

Sounds like you should be OK. If you tell them that Worthing did mine and have offered to help all A2OC members (they have!) then they should be keen to do it...they get the work paid for by Audi and the parts for free anyway. When Worthing agreed to do mine, suddenly Eastbourne offered to do it, even though they had known it was broken for 18 months !
Good luck and if they are not helpful give Chris a call at Worthing. Maybe you should email him first anyway...because if he says they will do it your local dealer will then be even keener to get the work.

haudi partner,

Great news you now have a fully working OSS…and hopefully the roof blind is in full order too (was the “trim issue” the movable blind). It also seems you did rather well on the cost of the servicing and MOT work too.

I hope the weather was good for your return journey home from Worthing and you had the roof open….let’s hope for some really great weather over the next few months so you can enjoy the new overhead opening.:D

Very well done to you, and Chris Smith and Audi UK for all the effort.

I’ll be giving Chris a call next week to see if he can do something for my juddering OSS.

Cheers

Hi Tom

Have you had time to try the above procedure. If so, did it work?///
