Binding rear caliper. Possibly.

Sticking rear calliper is common, happens to me every two years! A consequence of infrequent use. Further to Keith, clean up lubricate slider pins and piston and it will be fine.

Ah I understand which part you mean now - yes I bought one just in case!

Simple to change? Any other possible sources of stickiness in the system?

Thanks - will check all.

On may passat the handbrake lever on the caliper had silted up preventing correct opperation. Found these pads accross the VAG range have a nasty habit of seizing in the pad carriers.
Small cars in general dont suit rear disc brakes.

Right - I’ve got the car in the air and the handbrake mechanism on the calliper is sticking, the cable itself is fine.

I’m looking at it as per the pics - you can see the handbrake is stuck on at the calliper with the handle inside the car full released and the cable is consequently loose in its locating slot. I assume get the calliper off, the pads out and lubricate everything that looks like it should move freely?

A goo dclean and lube of the swivel bit will work wonders pal, should be a reasonably cheap fix for you...loads of WD on the pivot...

Lube might work as a temporary solution but looks to me like a new caliper is in order for a complete fix. New discs and pads aswell judging by the colour of the lip on the disc, it looks to have been getting red hot. Youd get a cheap caliper off Autodoc for about £40

Well Andy you’re right, lubricating the pivot with lots of WD40 after a good wire brushing and massaging on / off with mole grips has helped enormously and the thing is releasing 95% now, with a much improved handbrake feel (there’s no “dead zone” for the first couple of inches now). So thank you!

However it’s still binding slightly - a good whack with the hammer on the calliper body releases it fully - and I don’t have the stupid size 7mm Allen bit / key to undo the calliper.

So at least the car is usable for now while I sort out the tool.

@Tipptop - the lip is almost insubstantial when measuring with a finger nail, but the pads are getting on a bit so I’ll replace those for sure while it’s apart. Thanks for the comment.

Halfords or Amazon are your friend for the 7 mm hex key socket

WD40 is not a good lubricator, maintenance fluid is far better!

Imagine long term as already mentioned a new caliper with copper washers for the banjo will be required

On my 90 the binding was caused by the cable at the tunnel end

I don't understand why you think you need new handbrake cables when replacing the calipers, you do not. From a fuzzy memory some time ago the handbrake cable just unhooks from its application arm in simple fashion while you are swapping the calipers.

Hi

Sorry. I should have made it a little clearer. Im not replacing the cables if i dont need too. BUT just in case... I wanted to know if they are handed to each side or will 2 cables do for both side - ie 1 per side.

I can not answer that. Perhaps the lengths of the two different cable were not that significant so a one size fits all approach has been taken by the parts manufactures. The longer cable is perhaps routed slightly differently to effectively shorten it when fitted. If in doubt check with Audi.

Short answer is I don't know never had to deal with this.

Longer answer. If there is some doubt/confusion with the part numbers I would simply buy from Crewe Audi on here and quote the reg or vjn. You then know it is guaranteed to fit correctly, you might pay a little bit more but I think it is worth it for the peace of mind. The same goes for TPS if your local one will deal with members of the public.

I am still thinking about your quandary.

What is your VIN number? Share it by PM if you do not want to go public.

Andy

Sorry,

Just seen your email. I'll PM you now.

Changed both rear calipers and carriers. Rear driver side cable was a little binding at the caliper end. Ive order from ECP new Rear cable and its come today

Pagid 84925 - 1152/941mm - ECP no 108441388

Going to have a shimmy under the car at the weekend to decipher whats going on
