Cabin heater fan motor not working

The manual says to remove the blower, unplug connector and then remove a screw.

From the drawing, it looks like it's got a series of fins (cooling?) on it.

Cheers,

Mike

Are you able to tell me the part ID of the J126 control unit?

Many thanks.

Yesterday I unplug most connectors and fuses and re-seated them.

I left the car with the fan still not working.

But this morning I get in my car and within 2 minutes I feel hot air and the fan working.

Happy but confused.

I won't reasemble the trim just yet, give it a week or so and see how it goes.

And then, what happened? All ok just by reconnecting it all? My car seems to suffer from erratic heater fan / blower too. What was the fix? My fan does randomly sound a bit worn, then it might run just fine for a while, then it might not want to run at all and then the fan bars drop to 0 at the display. Playing with different settings sometimes makes it gain speed, sometimes not and hence maybe not really related to the issue?
Anyone that has solved this kind of issue?
Is the fan accessed through the glove box on a LHD vehicle also?

It's been a while since I looked, but from memory it was a very tight fit indeed. IIRC access to fan motor retaining screws was obscured by the passenger airbag and dash panel. It might be possible to remove the fan by loosening the dash panel rather than complete removal.

Sorry I can't be of more help, since the original fault the fan heater has continued to work without fault.

exploded view of dash / airbag

Does any one have a view showing how the das and passenger airbag are fitted.

If I can remove the airbag I might beable to remove the motor.

Humps posted a list of things that need to be done to remove the dash a while back.... in the G263 thread, I think.

Going on a long trip tomorrow and was looking forward to some me time in the A2. Popped out this evening to fuel up and I had the exact scenario exprienced by Will in the first post above. Climate control panel bars go up then down but nothing from the blower. No heating and no CC.

Mildly irritating as I'm not such a dab hand with the screw driver. I may try to attempt removal of the glove compartment but apart from perhaps disconnecting the said fan (assuming success in dismantling the said glove box) I'm not sure what the next stage should be.
I'd like to fiddle about a bit and wake up in the morning with the heating surprising me by blowing away, but knowing my luck........ .

I wish you the same luck I had. I Vag-com diagnostic scan might help to pin-point the issues.

With the drinks holder about the CC unit it could be related to that. So it's worth removing the stereo and then CC unit to check.

Thanks Will. Will see what the weekend brings. Doesn't look too cold out so might get the tools out.

We have (had) the same issue,

We have taken the glove box out and set the system to recirc (this opens a large flap below the blower) stuck one brave hand in through the opening and grabbed the fan and tried to rotate it, very stiff but after a few turns became free-ish, switched the unit on and its alive...

I am still going to remove the fan unit to clean it out but gives me a bit more time to plan the removal of the dashboard.

Grrrr!! Same issue here. strangely enough it happened just after we had the car remapped!! Coincidence? Will have to get in to the fan to see if it's seized up or something tommorow. Just as were forecast for snow on wed too!!! Typical

Ok gotten access to the blower, put 12v on it and it's spinning away no problems. So went to
My
Local breakers yard and acquired me a used J126 heater control unit from a busted up a2. Plugged it in and still the same issue. Any ideas of how I may bench test the j126 unit
To make sure the used one I have is working?? Really need this sorted as I can't drive the car without the window
Open to stop the windscreen fogging up and were forecast snow on Wednesday. Help!!!

bought a new resistor but still the same issue. iv purchased a new climate control unit and im hopin gthis may fix the issue. any other thoughts anyone...?

Can you move the fan by hand

... and is it stiff or loose.

If its stiff the fan is sticking (ours was) and it won't move via the CC unit but will via direct 12v.

Just a thought

Nope the fan doesn't even try and turn with the CC unit powering it, and it turns like crazy off direct 12v. I'm bamboozled and annoyed (fitted A3 replacement climate control unit today and nothing, no lights on it or anything, have sent it back and will have to search for a used A2 one. Anyone selling one by any chance?? Andy

I am not sure if you have tried to move the fan by hand...

With the glovebox out set the CC to recirc - this opens the bottom flap below the fan.
switch the ignition off - stick you hand through the opening and grab fan - it should move freely... if not the fan needs to be removed (cleaned and freed up if you can) or a replacement (which I did as I didn't have the time to clean and free ours)

Hi there, I had (well have) the same problem and I found this forum because I was searching for the solution :) THANK YOU!

In my case I had to remove the glovebox compartment (pretty easy task - 5 screws and that's it - had to find them but it was not hard because you can feel where the glovebox is not moving) and I manually moved the fan. As it was not working on first attempts I decided to give a help and by increasing the speed on the buttons I put my fingers inside the fan compartment and helped the fan to move (i was careful so it was not a dangerous thing to do).

Now the fan is moving but I would really like to lubricate it to prevent it from happening on next few years. Any idea? Do you feel a full fan unmount is really needed, or can I spray some WD40 inside and hope that would do the trick?...
