Death Pipe remanufacture in Stainless Steel. Hopefully now available.

I've just checked on 7zap, and it turns out that the 1.6 BAD FSI death pipe is exactly the same part number for the 1.4 AUA and BBY engines. That part number is 032 121 065 D so this part would be useful for those engines too, and may help to increase the order quantity. See here:

Cooling System - BAD engine

Cooling System - AUA and BBY engines

I recently changed this pipe and thermostat housing on our AUA 1.4, and the end of it where it goes into the water pump housing was falling to bits (possibly not surprising after 155K Miles and 23 years of service).

The flat bit on this pipe is necessary on the AUA and BBY engines, because it passes between the crankcase breather oil separator and the engine block. This probably keeps it warm, and may prevent condensation in the separator? On these engines, you have to take off the oil separator to change the pipe.

When I changed mine for a new Audi one, I would have definitely gone for one of these instead if it had been available. So in summary, I just wanted to say that the weird shape actually makes it applicable to a lot more applications.

On another note, the O-ring seal at the water pump end of this pipe is available separately, under part number 032 121 665 A.
Are the nipples used in the AUA & BBY applications? Or just the flat section for clearance?
Mac.

Thank you! I had just told Adam the flat wasn't needed. I will update him.

Please ask Adam to give you a guide to the cost, we need a rough idea of what we're committing to. Are we looking at circa £50, circa £75, or more each, for an initial batch with confirmed buyers?
Also ask for an estimate of the cost difference with, versus without the flat section.

Oooh! You've got me there Mac! 😳It was a few months ago that I did it (still meaning to do the write-up and post the pictures) and I can't honestly remember.

Maybe one of our venerable breakers @Ami @A2Steve or @Clackers could shed some light on it if they happen to have a handy AUA or BBY engine floating around? These wonderful folks provide lots of knowledge, as well as great parts! :)

I have a guide price for pipe at present, but this is based on very limited numbers being produced. Ie just a very few. Should it pass trial fitting, and all requests are fulfilled of nearly 30 so far, the price will drop quite a bit.

I am expecting to pay for the initial one off as a trial myself.

Flat is around £100, and round around £80 at present.
I am hoping to meet up with him the weekend of the end of season meal. He is based in Kennilworth, CV8.

ALSO, he needs the clip that retains the pipe into the thermostat housing, item 32 in the diagram earlier. Would anyone have one available??

Based on your guesstimate, I'd not want to pay £20 extra for a shape I don't need. Suggest keep the two offers separate.
I'd confirm a purchase at circa £80.
Thank you very much for the work you've put in to this so far.
See you Saturday 👍.

Ah, there was me smugly thinking I didn’t have a death pipe to worry about on my AUA, every day is a school day

Phil though the the price for a much more robust pipe sounds good, I would like one when its tried & tested please mate,
but not 5 as previously mentioned, I dont want to end up spending £400 pounds to put them in stock I am afraid, sorry didn't realize the manufacturing cost & low number of requests from members.
Cheers

I can certainly see your point on that Mac. It is the FSI engines that desperately need this pipe due to the fact that they run about 25°C hotter, so it is better to make it more accessible for those models.

After all, the pipe on our AUA did last 23 years and 155K Miles, so not really time to thump on the table and demand our money back! 😂The mention of the AUA/BBY engine would only have been useful if it boosted numbers sufficiently to make the production numbers, and hence price, more favourable.

Thank you so much for your efforts on this @Phil_B , and I shall be keeping a beady eye on this. I never intended to make it more complicated. ;)

Its fine!!! You haven't - any information and help is useful to Adam.

You don’t need to worry about it, it’s only the high temperature of the FSI that causes the issues with the pipe.

The same pipe is used in Fabias and Polos of the same era with no issue.
And the ProBoost ECU takes away the high temperature issue.

When we were working on the FSI lbl file, I did some engine temperature logging, as there was an error previously. I needed to get the engine temperature above 98C, and send the log to Ross-Tech. It was not easy, and I only managed to get just over 100C, and then only for a short time. I very much doubt that the engine gets to 110C very often, if at all with low engine load, and when engine load is high, the ECU lowers the engine temperature to around 85 - 90C.
I'm not denying that the pipe is a particular risk in the FSI, but I am sure the idea that the FSI engine routinely runs at 110 - 120C is a myth.
Mac.
Edit: Having read the post by @Indi I may have to revise my options. I'll do a new log, using the new lbl file, and see what that shows.
Mac.

Good Evening,

Many points I wish I could raised but time did not allow and now probably too late.

All I briefly want to say is there is no rush.

It needs an experienced member who has an FSI engine currently dropped and tilted forward to enable a thorough inspection as to any pitfalls of design simplification.

Good Evening Phil,

I have a vague memory I MAY have one but to save me a long afternoon's work trying to find it in the garage I will offer to buy Adam one.

Please provide necessary details by PM.

Thanks Andy, I will order one and have it sent to him. I already have his details.

I had a shock at the first item, £93!!!!

Good Afternoon,

Strange, I see no £93????? Devious targeted advertising.

Found a cheaper option..

It is odd, no £93 for me either. It was there earlier ...
Leave it a day or so, and it might be free, probably not though.
