DJ's adventures in A2 land

Yesterday I finally got to meet Tom @timmus and Ian @Proghound in Leighton Buzzard. They both worked on Audrey while I worked on my laptop in Ian's dining room.

Jobs done:

- Reflowing the solder on the driver's rear door lock to cure the de-safe fault in cold weather that manifested itself earlier this year
- The fitting of a @depronman check strap for the driver's door (which I hadn't even noticed was in a bad way as it wasn’t al that noisy), but now it's been done the difference is obvious!)
- Upgrading my existing early heated leather sports seats so that they now have lumbar support.

The latter was an involved, two-man job but Ian and Tom got there in the end and can safely say they've done something they've never before achieved with an A2! Tom only had black lumbar control buttons and seat trims - I genuinely think he has actually enhanced the aesthetics by tying in the rest of the car's (Soul Black) interior with the seats. Furthermore, I am so pleased by the visual difference I no longer feel the need to change to platinum leather - so I can finally lay that idea to rest. The photo below gives an idea but in-person the effect is more subtle than I think the photo suggests.

It did feel strange driving the car now that lumbar is fitted - before, my shoulders and neck would start to ache after around 2.5-3 hours, as the top of the sport seat pushes your shoulders forwards more than is ideal without lumbar - now with lumbar you sit slightly further forward, with the lumbar extended most / all of the way, which then alleviates this. Therefore if like me, you have non lumbar sports seats, I can highly recommend this upgrade if you do not wish to change your seats for a seat so equipped.

I hadn't realised until talking to the gents yesterday that Swing Grey was phased out quite early on in the A2's production run - certainly before lumbar support was offered; Tom therefore remarked how I have a unique set of seats now that mine have this.

In other news - Now the new Brembo X pads have bedded in nicely onto the grooved disks, the brakes are now very good and stop the car from high speed without fuss. Only complaint is they seem to generate a lot of brake dust on the wheels, but perhaps that will also calm down a little now.

Looking very good sir!

Well I've settled into having the lumbar and found my ideal position on the seats - all I can say is, wow. Worth every penny, the seats are so much more comfortable now and 3+hour drives are now no problem - I arrive as refreshed as when I departed, so Ian @Proghound and Tom @timmus - your handiwork gets a double thumbs up from me!

Today I did my latest oil change after 5,200 miles. I now have even a “proper” change (ie. via the sump plug with the undertray off, as opposed to through the dipstick tube with the extractor) down to a fine art now!

It was a bit early but I needed to get the tray off in any case to test fit a new club product - more on which will be announced soon….

Two annoyances stemming from my usual garage being the last to remove the tray (starter motor change during the winter), they obviously had issues reassembling:

1) Some of the undertray captive fixings are now missing in action - two out of the three subframe ones and all three at the very front - where can I get replacements?

2) In an attempt to secure the tray they had put a self tapper in either front corner - and in the case of near side, straight through the washer bottle! The amazing thing was this was water tight until I undid it!

Anyone know if a new washer bottle (ideally the larger of the two that came as part of the headlamp washer package) is still available?! The garage have offered to cover the cost by way of apology.

I can supply some plastic plugs for the subframe but there are two sizes of ‘square’ hole (Go figure that one )
If you can measure the length and width I can ensure I supply you the correct plugs
They can be drilled to accept you preferred screws. Ie the undertray screws

That’s awesome Paul thanks, I can yes - however, if there are only two sizes (assuming you mean only two that can be used for this application), I can tell you that the subframe ones are the larger and the front tray edge-to-spoiler ones will be smaller.

I did once order a complete undertray fixing kit from my local Audi parts dept David which wasnt cheap. Lots of screws, rubber mounts and clips etc but only 3 of them were correct. I returned the rest and we found out the part numbers were in fact wrong for the A2 on the "the system".

Sorry confusion

There are two different sizes of holes in the subframe. There is not a lot of difference but enough to stop the large ones going in and also enough to make the smaller ones useless
I can’t thing what you mean other than the subframe clips as everything else is on standard u clips to take the mounting screws

Ah - I must be missing the U clips on the spoiler then - how the garage has managed to lose three I don’t know. Anyone have a source for the correct ones?

For the subframe, I’ll dive under there next time I’m up at the workshop.

Right - I've gone ahead and bought three Febi subframe clips from eBay (thanks Paul for the offer) - OE part numbers are N10327101 or N10327102 - I also bought an assorted box of U clips for the front.

The garage has offered to replace the washer bottle at their cost, so I'm going to upgrade to the bigger capacity version normally fitted when a car was specified with the headlamp wash system - Luckily this part (8Z0955453B - thank you @audifan & @Andrew ) is still available via Audi Tradition, so I may as well turn this incident into an opportunity for a nice upgrade in capacity, as I seem to be filling the reservoir up monthly in the winter.

I also bought some more Mannol 7715 engine oil last night as I used up most of what I had left at the oil change - It's been 18 months since I last bought it and I'm pleased to see the price on eBay has only risen slightly, to £57.86 with discount.

Good stuff, that damage to washer bottle is classic! I used a epoxy putty mix that works under water, just emptied the bottle and dried it in situ. Then pressed a load of putty over it, worked a treat, you never see it anyway.

Got the car washed and polished and then had it up on the ramps with the tray off again to replace the air filter and all the under tray fixings.

This is what a 20k+ mile air filter looks like compared with a new one:

It was pricy to change the three rear tray fixings at around a tenner for three little push-in nuts but satisfying:

(Excuse the rusty subframe - I really must do something about that and the rear axle soon)

I used this cheap box of assorted U clips to replace all the originals - of which many were now missing since I last had the tray off:

Result - all done and my OCD can rest easy knowing all the bolts will still be there when next take the tray off - they were very tight to do up compared with before!

It was Dave, considering I’ve been getting 70+mpg on long journeys with it I was surprised it was so dirty - then again it’s massive for the job it has to do so I guess it’s not a problem - I believe Audi said it can do up to two long-life changes without being changed, so given that’s over 30k miles I guess it can handle more miles than I would ever subject it to.

Interesting I found that the OE Polo air filter I tried to fit at first won’t - this surprised me as it has the same dimensions and I had always thought the two 6N0129620 and 8Z0129620 part numbers were interchangeable- they are not. Luckily I also have some of the latter too so I guess I’ll just list the Polo ones on eBay.

Got a bit more time this evening while the car was still on the ramps - finally fitted the FSI and 3L spec “winglets” that are part of the aero-mod kit:

I’d had these when still available from the Crewe Audi before I’d even bought Audrey, as they had gone NLA by then. Pleased to finally get them on, wonder if they’ll make any difference?

I also have this underbody spoiler but the three holes needed on the subframe simply aren’t there! How does one go about sorting that? Anyone got any direct experience?
