Gearbox Recondition and 6-Speed Conversion

I ended up going the replacement route and bought a a brand new A3 S-Line gear knob. This did bring its own difficulties as the gaiter had to be cut and shaped to fit the A2s circular base.

I was a little disappointed as the leather was a ;lot softer and thinner than the original but I don't think it ended up looking too bad.

Nice job, looks good.

Wow that was fun and informative!
You should write a book called A2's for Dummies. Whilst many here probably understood much of what you describe, I personally didn't before hand. Thanks for making it so readable.

Thank you for your kind words. :)

I actually look back on this thread and don't think I've explained the mechanical side of things as well as I could have. Many of the photos were taken by Vince at Stealth whilst he did the work, meaning I had to build a lot of my explanations around the photos I was given. With the TDI120 project, I knew I'd write an article about it before I ever started, so collected my own photos throughout the development process, always with a view to explaining how things work. If you've not read it, it can be found here: https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/tdi120-my-new-engine.32986/

Cheers,

Tom

An eye-watering amount. The honest truth is that you do this conversion because you want to, not because the increased fuel economy is going to save you money. The kit of parts cost ~£1200 and you've then got installation on top. Quite clearly, this is a job for a gearbox specialist, not your average garage.

Carrying over your current musings about the longer 5th from another thread...

The longer 5th is, by comparison, a compromise solution, but it's cheap enough for it to pay for itself within a moderate period of time. Adding a 6th gear would require you to drive over 100,000 miles in 6th gear before you're close to the break-even point.

Cheers,

Tom
Thanks for the clear insight Tom , this helps massively for my project

I see the list of parts cost for the 6 speed was £1200 what I’ve missed is the labour cost of stealth for doing all the work ..does anyone know what total price is ,.thanks

I think probably best to contact Vince @ Stealth for a quote. He's a top bloke, and really looks after his customers. I've been going there for the best part of 20 years :)

I was just wondering someone must know ball park figure ...as it’s been talked about on more than occasion ..

Ok 6 speed MYP Gearbox is 4 to 500.
My conversion at Stealth was 470 which included a new clutch, fitting and vat.

Are you getting on okay with the MYP? Which engine do you have, as I understood there were issues with MYP and BHC engines.

Fine. Got the AMF engine with Pauls remap. Nice short throw. Ratios as original, just 6th as an overdrive for above 55 ish. Certainly reduces engine speed and noise on the mway.

aren't the MYP retrofit issues more to do with the starter motor (is it the ATL that is the one that was different?) - different number of teeth on the driver cog and shorter length mean that it doesn't mesh with the cog on the flywheel properly? Or have I missed another potential problem completely? I'm very tempted by an MYP if I can save some pennies, although if I decide to be responsible the steeper 5th that Paul was offering is a no-brainer.

The Starter Motor location spigot is maller than the bore in the MYP so care is needed to get the gears to mesh correctly. Think mine is ok now!

I know I’m a newbe but what is myp ‘tis like being back in school ? and I hated algebra ?? never did get it ..

I'm in the process of sourcing an MYP gearbox for my TDi 90, and I'm exploring both reconditioned 'boxes as well as off-the-shelf second hand ones. One question I've been asked by one reconditioner is, what are the preceding code letters before MYP in the specification. I'm guessing this is analogous to the specifications in the A2 manual:

So I'm looking for the Passat-equivalent of the 02T letters.

Thanks,

Mike

Found it! Its 0A4, if anyone needs to know. Also, I think the whole gearbox part no. is 02S300047M, if some Dutch breakers are to be believed.
