Head gasket

Can anyone recommend head gasket for Audi 14tdi 75 there seems to be different thickness and I'm not sure what one to go for

tHERE SHOULD BE SOME DOTS ON THE GASKET LABEL POKING OUT THE FRONT LEFT OF BLOCK TO HEAD ON THE FRONT of the engine. (sorry caps lock) This is the guide to original thickness fitted. Assumin you havent had it skimmed then you can replace like for like. If youre having it skimmed you need to add on the skim depth to this type of gasket and buy a slightly thicker one. If you good the 'dots head gasket sizes' it all becomes clearer....

Gasket thickness is based on piston protrusion so stick to original or thicker never thinner.
That's a 2 hole as its only the circular holes you count

What's your engine doing? I am close to embarking on fixing a lemon that's pressuring (was sold with a faulty clutch master cylinder lol) I bought off here but due to costs have decided to engine swop

I'm topping up with coolant about every 2 weeks or so with
No obvious signs of any leaks done sniff test saying C02
present so going on the theory head gasket leaking.

Certainly seems that way sadly, do you have excessive pressure in the system? According to Audi Technical you should not skim the heads but I spoke to an engineers in Bradford who said they had done them. I find it hard to find anyone that's done a 1.4 pd head gasket online as it does seem the engine change is the preferred method think the cost of head work, plus head bolts, gaskets, injector seals and securing bolts makes a replacement lump more viable but I would be interested in opening my old one up when I get them changed and see if it's possible to see what's failed

I have bought a clunker with coolant loss issues. I am going to have a go at removing the cylinder head. I have a spare head in very good condition from another engine. I will disconnect the exhaust from the turbo and hopefully remove the head with manifolds attached. As it is almost impossible for the top of the cast iron block to warp, I hope the replacement head with a new gasket and injector seals will cure the issue. I am just about convinced this may be less work than a full engine swap. The car actually drives really nicely. Engine pulls well, no smoke, turbo good, nice gear change and clutch etc. Previous owner had a continual problem with coolant loss without any obvious leaks. Wish me luck!

Getting a 20 year old lump that is worth fitting is almost impossible.

Your probably right but buying another engine you buying a unknown,
I think I prefer to do head probably get skimmed and thicker gasket plus
fit new cambelt kit same time parts not to expensive and my labour free
The problem with skimming is the hardened valve seat inserts that are very close to the head base. So close that the valves protrude below the head base. Any skim has to be lite or the fly cutter will snag the valve seat inserts. Any skimmed amount has to be added to the piston protrusion for calculating the gasket thickness. Otherwise valves and pistons could clash.

Edit scroll down to the last picture. The valve protrusion can be seen. https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/finding-and-preparing-a-new-to-me-amf.51801/page-10

Yes I understand about the skimming side I will get it checked to see
If it has warped and have a chat with our local engine specialist.

Watching with tremendous interest! Best of luck and please keep us posted!

The 4 exhaust nuts need removing whichever method is employed, really looking forward to that part lol!

I will also do the timing belt ect and be fitting a 02R gearbox so hopefully it will be a belter when sorted!

I also need to replace Flexi pipe so hopefully do at same time, I will post photos
When done but will have to wait for better weather as il be working outside..
