headlight bulbs

This is the thread that just keeps on giving... wish me luck, I'm torx'd up and raring to go...

Ok I am being a plank....I am poised to buy some new front bulbs and when I go to a couple of bulbs web sites they want me to buy H7 for both dipped and Main??
I have selected them by choosing Audi A2 on the web site itself.

Can I just doubly confirm that I DO need H7 & H3 not just H7's?

Sorry just want to be sure (ours is a 2003)

Yep h7 for dip h3 for high beam. Amazing how many sites have it wrong. Cheers mike.
Ps be great if you could make it to a social. A pair of yellow storms would be great.

Yep we intend coming to one soon :)

The car is coming together nicely now that we have decided to keep it.

Just needs a new clutch soon I think :(

Does anyone have a recommended technique for avoiding moisture ingress and fogging whilst changing the bulbs?
It is better to do from very cold or after running the engine for a while?
I had to change my dipped beam in the rain and ended up with a fogged headlight and freezing on the inside in the morning.
Does anyone put a silican bag in the light housing or anything to absorb the moisture?

Any ideas?

John

Followed your instructions and found them to be spot-on.
My advice to others is not to waste time poking about but do as you said.
Many thanks

Replaced the dipped bulbs again today (halfords ultrabrilliance, 2 for 1 offer). The previous ones lasted exactly a year to the day by some freakish coincidence.

Couldn't get the service flap to latch shut afterwards, looks like the spring has failed? (i.e., I can push the bolt in, but it does not come back out by itself without the help of pliers, so does not engage). Have WD40ed it, opened & shut it with the pliers many times, still does not move freely.

Mike,

Have you checked that the screw on the latch is not out of place?
You can move the bolt in and out and this proved to be the issue when my service flap to latch.
There is a screw on the middle of the mechanism to allow for adjustment. It is worth a try.

Ok first post so be gentle, I undid the cover at the back of the headlamp and the clip pinged off and I've lost it. Where can I get a new clip for the cover at the rear of the headlamps.

Feel like a right fool as I cannot find the clip anywhere in or out if the car.

Welcome. It's probably in the engine undertray. Contact member timmus who lives in your home town. I'm aware that his cellar is an alladins cave of A2 parts so he may have the spare bit you need if the original can't be found.

Good luck

I wouldn't mind betting that when you do get a replacement clip, the other one will turn up just after !!!

That is life!!!

And don't feel a fool, I did exactly the same thing once, so you are certainly not alone.

I have to say thanks for the tips on here. Had to replace ns bulb on the Wife's A2 last night, in the dark, in the rain.

Only took 5 minutes, so I took another 5 to clean and grease the service flap release. Now closes like it should.

Just to add another thanks for these instructions - used today for the second time as my n/s dipped headlight bulb failed again.

(Halfords bulb only lasted 12 months! Hope the Lucas bulb lasts a bit longer.)

Had a dipped beam go and knew I had headlight bulbs somewhere
Started turfing out my store cupboard found 2X Tesla H4 ultra bright and 1 X Lucas 60/55 H4
But no H7 or H3
Sods law, the Tesla were quite expensive and are very bright, they were what I bought about 12 months before I got the A2

Looks like its a trip to Halfrauds or me local Wilkinsons, sure they do headlight bulbs, hang on didn't Steve B post an ebay link somewhere to a decent bright set of normal not LED bulbs

I had 2sets of night breakers in under a year. And they weren't much brighter than the Philips Eco I have now if I'm honest. YMMV

Chris

I just bought TEN H7 100watt bulbs for £12 on eBay. I will let you know how they work out but that is cheap enough to make it worth the gamble. (Especially with 7 A2s in the family!)
