headlight bulbs

Just spotted some Osram 80 watt H7 bulbs. - http://www.powerbulbs.com/product/osram-super-bright-premium-h7

I've had mixed results with 'unbranded' bulbs which are cheap but not always cheerful but I'd expect these to be spot on for build quality and beam pattern.

Only for off-road use of course

Cheers Spike

Edit - attached the wrong link first time round and as per the warning from Steve B, the advert says they are not EE approved for road use

Hi Spike

we do need to to point out that 100watt headlight bulbs are illegal.

However i admit to using them because the A2 headlights are dim as standard and the 100watt bulbs give me the right level of illumination and to me are perfect. But that would not hold up in court. (Or an MOT if they somehow discovered the wattage)

Hi apologies for the direct reply, this is my first post on here after attempting to change a headlight bulb at the weekend, which as many others have commented isn't a 5 minute job. I'm half way there using a make it up as you go along method, wishing I have seen your post above before starting. The 2 screws that you have mentioned, other than what you have said above, any further help that you can offer on locating the screws? I remember seeing 1 screw pretty much central to the top of the headlight unit, and another towards the inside of the unit (towards the centre of the bonnet) but again on the top of the unit, are these the ones? Again apologies for the direct message

Hi,

there are only two bolts, although there is a third fixing which is a peg which needs to be disengaged after removing the two bolts.

On the top of the headlamp there is a strap with one bolt.
The second bolt is by the bottom corner of the inner edge, where the radiator is.
Once both bolts are removed, the headlight won't come straight out of the car as there is a peg engaged in a hole on the outer top corner. This will need to be disengaged by moving the headlight to the centre of the car and slightly forward. Once the peg is disengaged, the headlight can be withdrawn forwards.

I have annotated a headlight picture I have with the fixing positions, red where the two bolts are located and green for the peg:

Headlight fixings.jpg

As one of my headlight bolts is rusted solid and cannot be removed, I have always changed the bulbs in situe. Its not easy as it as to be done "by feel" and the position is awkward, but it is possible. Removing the headlight, if the bolts can be undone without any trouble, is much easier.

regards

Andrew

Hi

i have to point out again that 100watt headlight bulbs are illegal. But to me in an A2 the just seem to compensate for the poor illumination of a 55w.
As for ebay, just search for H7 100watt and there are lots to choose from.

Steve,
I agree that they are illegal, I know that and will run the risk !!!
There is so much crap on Ebay, so I was hoping for a link to a bulb that a member as found to be good, a recommendation goes a long way in my book.

Cheers,

Cheers,

I have bought these from 5 different sellers over the years and they have all been fine.

It is so long since any have blown that the old link is not still there.

At that price it is worth trying anyway. Just stay away from the ridiculously cheap ones, look for the number sold too.

55w might get a bit hot, hope your lenses don't melt Paul :p 35w is plenty for me & bright enough to see where am going

The HID's run cooler than the halogen bulbs, no worries on that count.
Will they be too bright, well that is another question. All I know is i'm sick of the two candles that Mr Audi chose to put on the front of my A2 :)
