How to replace rear door micro switch

On the suggestion of another post (and likely helped by this one) I took the less sophisticated approach to fixing it. A good soft (with my butt) thump and hey presto door open. Thanks for your help was likely a combination of dead locks and mis-aligned door!

ive got my old rear door lock in the back of my car give me 5 and ile grab it and take a few photos for you.

Regards gary

right ive just checked and you can manually unlock it with the alloy trim off like you have,

in this photo look at the red plastic part , its rotated to unlocked postion
IMG_0893.jpg

in this photo its rotated to locked position
IMG_0894.jpg

youl just see the red locking tab to the inside edge of the door frame , you may need to remove the foam water seal that covers the lock , try not to tear it as it keeps the water that drains through the door off the lock, its a low tack adhesive so just peel slowly
IMG_0898.jpg

if you look at the top left youl see a small wire , this conects to the outer door handle and when the handle is pulled it pulls the unlock arm
IMG_0891.jpg

now id suggest rotating the red plastic part and hopefully your door will open via the outside handle

if not its possible the cable is not connected to the door handle and you may have to manually move it on the lock

im not sure if your child lock is on or not so possibly you can just pull the interior cable

if you need any further help pm and ile send you my number so you can call and ile talk you through it ..

Good Luck

Regards Gary

Thanks Gary, I really appreciate you taking the time to take some photo's for me, hope you saw my reply (think I just snuck it in before you posted) not sure what it was but a good thump has unstuck it, now to replace the faulty cable which was the issue in the first place! :(

oh im glad youv got it sorted , id not refreshed so did not see youd sorted it,
if you need to remove the whole lock, or adjust the cable,, look on the side of the door where the 2 bolts are that hold the lock to the door, youl see a round black plastic cap remove that and behind it is a torx bolt , undo it as such till it starts to tighten , then if you pull the outside handle , the smaller part like the drivers door key slotted one pulls out , the cable is attached inside hear and pushes into a ribbed channel ... you may just need to adjust the slack out of the cable so it moves up the notches ...

New issue, door locks and unlocks now no issue but the door still has the same problem in that it catches but doesn't release without a thump, is there a guide to adjusting the lock and latch to catch properly, I have adjusted the latch with no luck.

Ok I have attempted this tonight. No luck Im afraid, You can work the lock with pins 1-4 and 1-2 and this locks/unlocks different components according the polarity but nothing seems to make the door open? Any other thoughts? both the door car and aluminium shielf are off the door at present so have good access apart from to the crucial door jams. What a nightmare this is!

Undo the exterior door handle and ensure that the small cable is properly seated. It is that cable that is causing the problem!!!

Spot on Steve, I noticed that was the only variable also, I adjusted the clip back in towards the car (I had it hard up against the exterior handle) and with some WD40 to ease it in it now works beautifully, many thanks for all your help guys, rebuild time (at last) :D

i need to do both front and back doors drivers side of my wifes a2 :( im sure ive seen a detailed thread on this from a longterm member. how easy was it james on a scale 1-10 and how long did it take you?

I've not completed the microswitch part but simply getting to the lock from there I'm not sure how long it would take. But for the part I have done and working with what I now know probably about 20 minutes to get to the door lock and 5 minutes to remove it. If you need a hand just shout Cammy.

lol the longterm member i was referring to in my earlier reply was grim reaper....didnt realise this was his thread doh!

what would be good james if we have certain issues to address regarding repairs, mods or anything else maybe we could meet up at a location that suits us all. i am happy for people to come to mine (time being agreed) as i have a big garage that is more than capable of doing any job within. i also have a darts board, tv and arcade machine to keep us entertained :D

plus its always good to get an extra pair of hands and advice along the way should we do something wrong. ramps, axel stands and trolley jack is at hand for the more difficult jobs. just say when and im all for it. should you or anyone else want to do it at their own house or other premises im all for that too :)

cheers

Just let me know when suits. I have plenty of space too but whatever suits best. No dart board or arcade machine however

yep sounds good james :)

hopefully others will see this too but lets not hijack this thread with personal stuff lol

before removing the door lock you will see a black threaded split holding bracket that is connected to the door lock. for me to remove this i pushed it past the split part of the threaded section as it was easier (probably not the way to do it) what i did notice was when changing this part over you need to pivot it to left or right (cant remember) as it will slide down into the hooked holder. hope this makes sense but looking at the other door lock it looked like it just popped in and popped out but it doesnt.

after all the hard work was done in stripping everything it looks like i was sold a defective unit courtesy of an ebay member who strips a2's .....will need to find his name and post it. i cant return it as i bought it about 2 years ago and thats me just getting around to do this job :/ so will try and strip down mine and see where the fault is, failing that its hammer time

some photos.... IMG-20171007-WA0000_resized_20171007_061401206.jpegIMG-20171007-WA0004.jpgIMG-20171007-WA0006.jpg

a big thanks to depronman for his patience and help on this job

Hi all,

I'm having trouble getting the rear driver side internal panel off, the photos on the start of this 'how-to' are no longer there so I've tried my best to get the internal panel off (taking off all the TORX screws and the two Philips heads...)but it wont come off...

Reason being, the rear electric window dropped whilst I was coming home on the M5 *great*, I could manually push it up, but it kept dropping, motor and switch are fine, window is in place, I think the plastic bit that helps lift the window up is broken as it will go down just fine using the normal switch but it will not go up or stay up.!

I used another short thread's guidance on keeping it propped up for now with a bit of wood. I would really like to get the internal door card off so I can fully understand what the issue is... I suspect its the regulator, but couldnt find anything on this.

Any help would be appreciated. Photos are below of where I am, last photo are the broken bits I found inside the door!

Thanks.

Todd

That white plastic part which is holding window is broken. This part is made of plastic and when metal cord mounting point is broken motor can not lift glass up or down what depends on which place is broken. Motor just spins the cord which has nothing to hook up to move the window.
Had the same problem and did not find new part to buy. So had to improvise with some plastic peaces and bolts.

But first of all you need to remove that part.

Ah thanks Vic, is it worth just buying a new regulator? I assume if I get a 2nd hand one it could break again!

How did you fix it? Do you have a picture of it?

Thanks!

Unfortunately I do not have photos...

You have to attach metal cord to its place on the rear side of part. In one window i used bolt through the part and another which was broken also i just made some holes and used metal wire to fasten it in place.

I do not think that it is worth to buy all mechanism because of one broken part which you can fix. The most difficult is to unclip this part from the glass without breaking anything. All depends on finance and willingness to do it yourself :)

Does anyone maybe have the photos saved from the first post in this thread?
I also need to replace/repair the left rear door lock. I have access to the replacement part in a scrap car, but I did not manage to take out the door locking mechanism, because I am strugling with how to disconnect it from the door handle without damaging something.
