Insurance costs - Renewal 2024 / new policies ?

Hi Tom. Yes customer service is important but difficult to gauge in advance personally and one has to rely on other's experience.

I'm leaning towards Shelia's Wheels (2nd cheapest I've found so far) but at £320 is still £100 more than I'm currently paying. The comparison site said they were well rated by Which?
Sheila's Whee is part of the eSure group.
Mac.

I just went thru this last week. I’ve had my A2 with RAC for insurance ( they act as a broker and find you an insurer) for last 7 years. Their renewal price increased this year by 38% over last year. I phoned them up, heard all about how costs have risen but persisted. After answering a dozen questions on information they already had, they came back with a cheaper price. This year went up 9% over last which I can live with. I say phone your company up and have them do the legwork to figure out how to keep you as a customer.

I’m not sure what is going on. Only my Mrs’s E coupe inches above £200. My A2 and Boxster are about £120 each. Is it where I live?

Most likely. But when is your insurance due for renewal? Were those last year's figures?

I just went to https://crimerate.co.uk and in 2024

A modern estate like mine in Boroughbridge YO51 9NW is

56Th Most Dangerous Village
Villages, North Yorkshire

26% lower, regional crime rate
Yorkshire and The Humber

6% lower, national crime rate
England, Wales & NI

and Trowbridge is

Second Most Dangerous
Medium-Sized Towns, Wiltshire

12% higher, regional crime rate
South West

18% lower, national crime rate
England, Wales & NI

Some insurance companies will go down to individual post codes and will probably look at vehicle crime as well as vehicle accident rates. Also I suspect at thing like owner occupied. Our estate is a mix of 2 to 4 bedroom modern houses (207 years old). Over the years the 2 bedroom ones seem to be bought by buy to let and it tends to show (eg more tatty looking gardens).

I got a call from Adrian Flux who I was insured with about 5 years ago (begs the question how long they should keep my data). They quoted £500 cf my LV= renewal of £340! I also went to LV= website as a new customer and was quoted £335.

I've seen a couple of reports in the media that motor insurance has risen by an average of 56% this year (Feb or Mar fig). I wouldn't be surprised if the old boy insurance network sends the word round that 50% + is the new norm.

Now if I could get a 40+ % pay rise to compensate some of the extra costs over the past couple of years 🤔.
Unfortunately I'm probably similar to what I was on 10 years ago.
Luckily the mortgage is paid off to compensate a little for it.
The world could do with more politicians who want what is best for it's citizens.
Now that is a pipe dream.

Try Adrian Flux. Still expensive but not massively more than last year.
I have agreed value (cost a little bit more) and mileage is 10,000 per year.
This is on a 2005 low mileage TDi.
Good luck and hope this helps. 🍀😊

I was with them for many years but each year the reduced the agreed value despite me giving them lots of examples of well maintained A2s on this forum being sold for good prices. I think that are too many people buying A2s for their cheapness - use them, flog them to death and then dispose of them - "bangeromics" I think it is called. In 20/21 I paid £436 including the Agreed Value premium

Re getting a quote from Adrian Flux: as I said yesterdays:

Seems incredibly low. I went to https://www.finder.com/uk/car-insurance/porsche-boxster-insurance-group and it gives a Boxer an insurance category of 43-46 and the lowest premium of £764 for a 50 year old in Newcastle that they say is the UK average for rates.

For an A2 they say the group is typically 13 with a lowest premium of £534 for a 50 year old in Newcastle.

I will try Saga tomorrow

It does indeed seem odd that my A2 TDi is £400 and yet my wife’s Suzuki wagon R (yes I know!) is under £300. The cars are the same age etc!

It all seems like a wet finger in the air and this year we can charge this amount, the reason will be we have had more / less / younger / Older / make up what you think you will get away with etc.
They have to pay or you will be fined if caught.
Nice Profits,

Yeah my girlfriend had a Vauxhall Agila (rebadged wagon R) and she was quoted about £100 more for insurance on my 1.4 petrol A2 than for her Agila

I think the A2s are above average for cars of that age and class, the other day I was speculatively putting in quotes for cars I’m not going to buy, and was quoted less for a 1st gen TT than for my FSI, which was surprising. As a 23 year old male with 2 years no claims I thought a 200hp 4wd sports car would be more expensive than a similar age warm hatch with barely over half the power…

As of a few weeks ago I’m paying £770 for the FSI, six months ago I paid £560 for the 1.4 petrol, though that’s cancelled now and gone up to £660 in the intervening 6 months if I wanted to insure again now.

Not just car insurance either.
Mac.

Went to Saga site and completed pages of questions only to be declined! I suspect it is the modification.

A2 is chipped +25% but all I could select was Engine/Performance / Other. Question was on 1st page. If it was that I wish they had rejected me then, rather that waste my time completing the other 100 questions.

Also no option to go back and experiment. And I did not see an option to protect NCB but they did offer to freeze premiums for 3 years (without saying how much that would cost).

I would be reluctant to disclose some "minor" mods, for that reason. Makes you seem like Boy Racer.
IF it was checked post accident, how would they know you had modded it, instead of you unknowingly buying it like that?

I just got my renwal through for A2 TXG (Alan) and it was £310 fully comp with Gary as a named driver, compared to £239 last year. I just went through GoCompare and got it for £198 with RAC (5,000 miles pa, £125 excess, protected ncd, sdp, plus commuting) so it pays to shop around (I do have nearly 39 years no claims though!)
