mpg

sorry, i dont get it, 1000rpm is tick over, in fifth gear over 40mph expect 1500rpm, but you'll stall it if you went any lower

what speed is a tdi 75 doing at 1000 rpmin 5th?
just so I can compare with a tdi 90:confused:

I think you can take the speed at 2000rpm and divide it by 2. My TDI75 does 56mph at 2000rpm, so that is 28mph at 1000rpm. This is a bit slow if you compare it with the 5th gear in a Polo Bluemotion, but that is progress!

Imranshariff:

Gearing is often described in 'mph per 1000 rpm', it doesn't mean the car will actually drive at 1000 rpm in 5th! I ams ure the issue of gearing is covered in a thread on here but can't find it ATM. From memory the 90 is @ 10% longer (or higher) top gear.

And provided the engine hasn't run out of puff, should see you doing 112mph at 4000rpm...

and in theory, you could be overtaken by a Polo Bluemotion doing 140 at 4000rpm. (150 all out?) But to be honest I have no interest in doing 112mph in my car. I have a strong self preservation and licence preservation instinct and 42 mph over the motorway speed limit is not for me. Motorists are such an easy target these days it's just not worth giving the Gentlemen of the Law an excuse to take my licence away.

thanks Adrian thats the answer I wanted, mine does 45mph at 1200 rpm roughly.
It can be driven at that speed too.
Trying very hard,Im getting 56 mpg on a 6 mile trip, once I learnt how not to drive it!
thats doing 45ish in top

mpg 1.4 petrol

This has been one of my disappointments with my 1.4 petrol....I have monitored the mpg for some months and I only get just over 30mpg....that includes around town and regular trips to Wales on dual carriageways and using cruise control.....I had a 2.4cc petrol, automatic Volvo before the A2 and was able to get up to 40mpg from that....

Sounds very low for the A2, I wonder if you've got a problem with over-fuelling there, perhaps from a dodgy lambda sensor or the MAF. I could almost get 30mpg from my A4 V6 quattro if I was driving frugally enough on 99Octane and that was a 1.6tonne car with big engine and 4wheel drive.

Let me help you feel better.

1. So far this week my diesel has averaged 28mpg.
2. Diesel costs 12p per litre more than petrol.

My 1.8 focus MK1 use to get average 35mpg thats why i went for 1.4TDI (+£35 Road tax)

I agree with Dan b that does seem a little low even on a long run, go get a full diagnostic done see if anything comes up

Cheers Phil

Drove from near wakefield to NEC and back yesterday which is 95% M/way, cruising at 75-78mph most of the way there, return in heavy-ish traffic and DIS showed 60.8mpg for the journey:D. Best ever economy!

Well I've just burned through a whole tank of diesel with all the driving in London and returned 42mpg with a shot of Millers Diesel Additive in there for good measure. That brings my overall mpg down closer to the 50mpg mark now, so I'm still happy. At least fuel is getting a bit cheaper - paid 99p/litre in Sainsbury's on Saturday.

I'm starting to worry about my consumption as well. When it's normal weather (not cold) i average about 60 mpg, since we've had this little cold snap, it's dropped to about 48.

I don't drive any differently, it's the same route to work every day, so i can only put it down to the cold weather.

I am due a service, but don't have the facilities to do it myself, so that will be done at Christmas when i go and see my parents and use daddies tools:)

I think 42mpg all in urban crawl is pretty decent, I certainly wasn't chasing mpg figures and driving like a saint.

i would say a diesel take longer to warm up than a petrol around town so fuel ecomomy will suffer maybe?

TDIs

Get a pre-heater or store car under carport/shelter/in garage, change up sooner eg: 1500 rpm instead of 2000 rpm, and most of all: ANTICIPATE !

Freewheel down hill - used to do that in the early noughties fuel crisis in my Mk1 MR2, mpg went from 28 up to 39 !

Less braking and stop starting will improve our MPG whatever you drive.

Get up to cruise speed asap and stay there.

Have fun!

I have a 1.6 fsi sport, MPG is great for a petrol, on a run its hits 49.0 mpg and in town it has never dropped below 35. mpg but I drive fairly carefully as I have a Honda Fireblade to get my kicks so the little A2 is not trashed. At the weekend - the MPG fell massively - 29.0 and was shocked. It's never been anywhere near that territory, so I investigated to find a flat rear tyre. All fixed now and MPG is a gleeful 34.5 MPG and increasing. Over all I am happy with the 1.6 FSI, I think it's smoother than the TDI and I don't do the mileage to warrant a diesel. When the FSI starts up it does sound like a diesel engine but that's just one of the characteristics of the FSI and it last's for a couple of seconds then calms down. I get 35 to 39 MPG around town, 49 MPG on a run but if I am in a hurry on the motorway it drops to 45/46 MPG.
