Multifunction steering wheel?

I'm going to water the thread down by not quoting part numbers, but actually smiling at the fact that mine has this steering wheel, in black and fully functional!! I'm not gloating, just smiling, as Furrie10 says, I thought they were a normal fit.......... till I read this thread.

Hey All

I know it's a punt but does anyone have a multifunction wheel they would like to sell on?

I also thought this which is why I purchased one but it seems that the controller you can see in the pic is not compatible with our A2's. More specifically the pin out schematic for the 8 pin connector does not exist in ELSAWin

The A2 uses a 3 pin connector for multifunction control.

If anyone has installed one of these and knows which pin on the 8 pin connector is LIN, earth, and 12v+ this would be really helpful.

I have an A1 multi function wheel with a 3 pin connector. Wires are Black / Brown / Red. Does anyone know what the 3 wires are? I am assuming GND / 12V / DATA. Equally I guess its a CAN device given the amount of electronics within the wheel, but I expected 4 wires for CAN, i.e. Hi/Lo/GND/12V ... Anyone shed any light? I am looking to connect the buttons to an iPhone Bluetooth controller and am considering options.

I don't know about the multifunction wiring, but check first if it is a single stage airbag.

Only the older and the latest Audis seem to have single stage airbags, in between they switched to dual stage and the A2 can't trigger two stages. Yes you MIGHT be able to adapt a two stage airbag to single stage operation, but as this is a critical safety item I would prefer not to modify such a thing.

I had to buy the latest TT steering wheel to get the single stage operation.

I am happy to be corrected, I am no expert in this, I am just giving the "safety message"

No airbag, so simple really :) I already know about single/dual stage, but thanks anyway.

Thanks for understanding that I was also considering others that may not know about the two stage / one stage difference.

But when you say "no air bag"????????? Surely not? That is a major safety feature.

Well there isn't one on my bike, nor the integrale, nor the Ferrari and the impact is lightly to be higher force with all of those...I may fit one eventually but not too bothered to be honest, I don't like ABS or ESP either :)

There could be a big issue with insurance if you, or particularly another driver, is seriously hurt and the removal of this key safety feature compounded those injuries. They are likely to refuse payment for personal injuries, or even worse, sue you for damages.

Cheers Spike

I see what you are saying about many cars don't have them and it is (of course) your choice, but we as a club cannot be seen to be supporting the removal of safety features.

By the way, how did you manage to prevent the air bag warning light, not only is that an MOT failure, but it would annoy the hell out of me, I like a dash clear of error codes.

Thanks for that Spike, I am aware of the insurance industry too, but others may not be aware, so good to advise.

I'm sure there would be equal grounds for an insurance issue if the airbag mounted in the car wasn't intended for the vehicle in question as there are many more variables than single or dual, such as trigger priming delay, charge size, charge energy content, bag shape, bag size, seat heights, minimum and maximum wheel distance and wheel angle. An A2's airbag expansion parameters will be different to a TT's which could cause injury or increase burn severity etc if a TT airbag explodes within an A2.

Equally ANY change from original equipment will alter the operation of the cars ACTIVE safety features. Including none AO tyres, tyre sizes, wheel sizes, brake pads, suspension and weight distribution.

The forum should not recommend any changes from OE really.

I haven't fitted the wheel yet so no warning lamp, I first need to work out what the 3 wires do as per my original post.
